A note from the releasing label, Nonesuch, confirms this. Halvorson says: “Ambrose was interested in trying a Line Six. I gave him one five minutes before the rehearsal and was amazed how quickly he was able to do incredible shit on it … in literally five minutes."

It’s especially exciting because it appears (check around 25 seconds in) to evidence Akinmusire employing electronics to layer his instrument and, soon after, to develop foundational pads.
New collaboration between trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and guitarist Mary Halvorson, Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings, gets a preview with the forthcoming (June 12, 2026) album’s fourth track (of nine), appropriately title “Soundcheck.”

I usually read during lunch, but Tortoise on Amoeba’s What’s in My Bag? got 12 of my minutes immediately.

In the Disquiet Junto music community this week: make music for takeoff. Full instructions at disquiet.com/0746. Tracks due Monday, April 20, at 11:59pm (your local time). And ... four weeks until 750th consecutive weekly #DisquietJunto project
Four musicians in a packed club
LJ Holoman (organ), Joe Warner (piano), Dante Robertson (drums), and Michael “Tiny” Lindsey (bass) killed it last night at the Black Cat in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Packed house for a jazz/r&b session on a Wednesday at 7pm, a two-hour set. Holoman is a marvel and the band was tight as heck.
It’s a good sign when you arrive at a jazz club for a concert and the pre-show music playing on the house stereo is un-Shazam-able.
A new #DisquietJunto music community project will appear at 12:10am Pacific tomorrow (April 16, 2026) at disquiet.com/0746, and go out at the same time to the email list (juntoletter.disquiet.com). The theme is takeoff (as in airplanes). Join in.
I think there was a break of about two years between when I stopped capitalizing the internet and started occasionally capitalizing the Algorithm
In that way, the song moves both forward and backward in time as it nestles deeper into the collective culture.
which is to say, in 25 years we will likely still be celebrating “Avril 14th” Day, and doing so on instruments and technologies that don’t yet exist, as well as on ones that predated the late-1980s technology, the Disklavier, on which it was first recorded.
When something cultural like this takes root, as enough time passes that you can think of it as an annual tradition, you start to wonder if and why the communal activity might ever stop —
Each year, musicians around the world record versions of Aphex Twin’s “Avril 14th” and share them.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the song, which first appeared on Aphex Twin’s 2001 album, Drukqs.
April 14th is up there with August 8th (aka 808 Day, after the classic Roland drum machine) as the best electronic music holiday of the year. And you can fold in July 18, World Listening Day, timed to the birthday of Canadian acoustic ecologist and composer R. Murray Schafer.
Not a single “Avril 14th” video was uploaded to Vimeo in the seven days leading up to and including (as of 5:45pm Pacific) April 14th?

Continuing to really dig my Xteink X4 ereader, a tiny eink device that easily fits in a shirt pocket. I outfitted the gadget’s sleep screen with the central image from the American edition of William Gibson’s 2020 novel, Agency.
