Today’s Guernsey: Another glorious day of reorganization! Finished moving delicate stuff OUT of the rooms, now need to move all the non-delicate stuff INTO the rooms! 😪 #gamedev #indieGameDev #glamour

Today’s Guernsey: following my notes from a few days ago, went through the first 4 rows of the map (it’s an 11x9 grid) and pulled out everything that might break when the world is divided into smaller scenes.
Not glamorous but it moves the needle! 🥵 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today’s Guernsey: As promised, a break from scene streaming shenanigans. Today I had a vision of a car buried in fall leaves. And here it is. #gamedev #indieGameDev
Tonight’s Guernsey: just a small amount of work testing and taking note of all the damage this scene streaming business will do.
I’m in a low internet world right now so have a PHOTO of a screenshot! 🏕️ #gamedev #indieGameDev
Tonight's Guernsey: Hacking away at a copy of the game to get scene streaming tested. 😰 Tonight I got past the bootflow, now it just... breaks at the start menu!
Maybe don't make a game quite this way, kids! #gamedev #indieGameDev

Tonight's Guernsey: Implemented a corner of the world with scene streaming to see how much it would break.
Answer: a lot. So taking notes on what all needs to be changed to be fixed. ✍🏻 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Ah, kind words, thank you!
Today's Guernsey: Experimented with built-in tools for splitting terrain into smaller chunks to see how that would go. Promising results, though not quite what I expected! Will need to try out scene streaming next and see how those ideas... CONGEAL. 🤤 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Spent a lot of time just drag-and-dropping different objects into different folders to organize the world better, in preparation for chunking it up for streaming.
Also fixed a somehow-missing-material on this bird grave. 🪦 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Worried about the performance of my open world and thinking I should probably load and unload "rooms" as the player moves about.
So I started setting up a test project for that -- 'cause I don't wanna break the main one.
Wish me luck! 😰 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Just a small one, fixed some sprites that probably should have been textures but have been sprites since Time Immemorial. Babysteps! 🍂 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey:
🚮Made a few more tweaks to Chapter 2-area collectibles
💾Got Unity + Guernsey up and running on a new laptop for travel
#gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Last few playtests have given me feedback that the Chapter 2 flower quest has some flaws, so I tidied it up a bit and made it a bit smaller and adjusted some open-world goals to match.
Fixed a bunch of miscellaneous bugs, too! 💐🐞 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: A bit of architectural work.
🧱Adjusted church, tomb, & cabin interiors for more cutaway
🪦Added contrast to tomb materials for visual appeal
😮💨Stared for a while at a design decision I'm reluctant to make and... didn't!
That's today! #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Chapter 1's Eunice Lydecker needed animating, so here she is! #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Set out to fix what felt like an abrupt ending to dialogue -- and discovered in the process of writing it that I'd already written it -- so fixed and hooked that up! But that's about all I gots today, it's been a busy one. #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: This screenshot is now a mark of shame 'cause I still don't know what's causing this bug. So, I'm just gonna set it aside for now and do other stuff. But... at least I improved some code along the way! #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Tried, tried, and tried again to fix this weird cabin-being-open-during-the-cutscene bug. No idea why it's happening, probably just need to ground up redo it but it's been a long week and 😴 #gamedev #indieGameDev
And... all the code is C# and edited in Sublime, which I haphazardly plugged into Unity. 🤷🏻♂️ That's a roughly thorough overview -- did you have any more specific questions?
Everything in the scene is angled towards the camera. Trees, graves, and other "standing" objects are usually pitched 20 degrees around the x axis, while sprites are pitched 45 degrees to create a "billboard" effect -- but it's not true billboarding, which is fine because the camera never rotates.
All the textures are mapped onto Unity's primitives. There are no models beyond planes, quads, cubes, and spheres. I'm not a 3D artist, and when I set out it wasn't my objective to learn. :) Sometimes I've added normal maps for a bit more texture. The end result is pleasantly nostalgic, PS1-era.
Normally I use Unity's built-in shaders, but I have a custom shader which allows cutouts and runtime alpha fading in and out for tree leaves. In a 3/4 view game set in a forest, trees get in the way. Now I just turn the alpha of objects that get in front of the camera way down, and it's all good.
Oh, no problem! Guernsey is made in Unity. The whole game takes place in one massive scene (maybe not the best choice 😅).
I use several plugins, including InControl, EasySave3, and an older water package called SUIMONO. All textures and sprites are made in an art program called Marmoset Hexels.
Today's Guernsey: Finished my playthrough! Fixed a couple of small bugs, and now I'm gonna print a build and send it to some folks. :) #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey update: Tried to tackle a couple of bugs with Chapter ?'s ending cutscene. Got one -- Guernsey falls asleep, and is no longer aflame. 🙃 But the cabin is still showing the world its guts. Will tackle that one tomorrow, too sleepy.

Today's Guernsey: Played through the rest of Chapter 4 and the mysterious Chapter ?, which brings us back to where we started: Friday, the Omura funeral.
Fixed a bunch of small bugs found! #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: Fixed a few small things; most notably, Willows are much larger since I fleshed them out a month or so ago, and they needed some transparency flags added.
That's better! 🙌🏻 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Today's Guernsey: following yesterday, a bunch of new code that...
🐓Makes the "questitem" icon tick down instead of up for the chicken
📖Males the icon hidden when loading up a game until the title goes away
Relatively elegant for a one-off need! 👻 #gamedev #indieGameDev
Not really, I just post about it daily here and on Twitter. Did you have a particular question or topic you wanted to know about?
