From the bottom of my heart, thank you @themountaingoats.bsky.social for an evening I've waited a lifetime for.

My first night out without my baby daughter since becoming a parent - to hear the music that kept me here to meet her.

More than a few sobs of wrenching gratitude words can't

Whenever people (correctly) argue that Gamergate was a pivotal event in the development of the modern right, I always get the sense that a lot of people who object are doing so out of a sense of embarrassment that something so stupid could be so significant

Given everything happening right now, I updated this article with options for weather apps, web forms, and translation services — along with some tweaks to existing categories.

I hope it helps your transition off US tech!

A screenshot of a Google search for "dorothy pitman hughes" showing the two selected images which should highlight her are instead centering Gloria Steinem - Dorothy's face is cut off half way in the first, and only her right arm is visible in the second.

Went to check a fact and ran into this embarrassment of a search

Quote from Luxon discussing why increasing prisoner numbers is a good thing - "And it's pretty simple, we do not want people in the community [committing crimes]."

Pretty embarrassing for journalists to have to overlay a "committing crimes" clarification in square brackets after the Prime Minister of NZ says "And it's pretty simple, we do not want people in the community." which frankly rings reasonably true given the exodus they have been driving.

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

how did i go so long not knowing we were literally teaching people to read wrong. i knew something wasn't right but jesus christ www.apmreports.org/episode/2019...

FFS small towns often have relatively heavier traffic because they're service hubs for a wide area. I once moved from a big city to a town with a population a bit over 3k and the open air pedestrian mall was busier than Cuba St much of the time. Hell, check our Greytown or Martinborough any weekend!

Also houses haven't cost 3k/m2 for years and anyone telling you so has either not built a house or has built the biggest and worst house imaginable. Unless you love a 400m2 void full of 7°C rooms you don't go into I guess

If anyone is upset about their rates going towards the upgrade, pretend my rates are covering your contribution while your rates double cover the botanical garden and khandallah pool upgrades.

Apparently controversial but I think the proposal for fencing Wellington is good actually - I've been aware since I was a kid that a trip the wrong direction rollerblading around there could mean cracking my skull open on the rocks. I would like fences please.

You okay?

So let me get this straight. We invite the FBI boss to Wellington to open an office. He then says he'll use it to spy on our top export buyer, China, who is then as pissed as. Then Trump HIKES our tariff to 15% from 10%, making us less competitive vs Australia's beef/wine exports to US - still 10%.🤷‍♂️

Sign the Petition Politicians must have skin in the game

While we're feeling nerd spicy how about this neat little petition about making sure the people making the decisions about how our healthcare system works are actually invested in it the same as the rest of us without their wealth xx www.change.org/p/politician...

Does anyone know where to find details of the civil defence alert that just happened? I dismissed it super quick because I had a baby dropping off to sleep and I didn't know how else to make the noise stop!

Meth consumption still high, no evidence of related spike in crime But police data is yet to show evidence of any related significant spike in crime.

Why do none of the many articles on the spike in meth use connect it to David Seymour removing protections on pseudoephedrine - making it far far easier to get the materials to make meth? Like, this is a clear and expected and devastating consequence, not some blip. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

This lines up perfectly how is this not being written about??

What led to the X for Cunliffe-Steel here? Was it him declining to answer Retain or Remove?

Everything I've seen from him seems legit and he has posted good answers in the q+a threads.

Also to be clear I don't know anything about the candidate so don't take this as advocacy for him - I need to do more research myself - I'm just responding regarding the substantive beliefs

It's a tech conversation but not necessarily a techbro thing. Copyright law is largely a panacea for large corporates, not individual creatives and it's unfortunate that in opposing AI vacuuming up IP that copyright law is seen comparatively favourably. Creative commons and open source is better.

The average person over 100k pays about a dollar more a week but it funds dental care! So yeah, $50 a year and you get dental care. It's a fantastic freaking budget
