Especially since public schools have not been fully funded since IDEA became federal law. It's a good law but has never been fully funded by Congress. States have to take from their own limited resources to do that, and not be able to do all they could in other areas of ed funding.

They wanted their own private school because the public schools weren't and the other private school didn't cater to their version of Christianity. I had kids whose families tried the "Christian" school and they were made to feel unwelcome because they didn't go to the right church.
Church group wanted to build a charter school in our small town. At a public hearing they said if "little Maria's family" couldn't afford tuition she could pull weeds on the weekend. I'm the one who gasped. The charter was denied. #inners #TheWeeknight
