"hep to the jive"
4-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 10x12cm
panel 1: zala zuri, an iranian trans woman wearing a pink and blue retro color block windbreaker and a pink ballcap, is walking down the sidewalk when one of a trio of middle school boys across the street call over to her, "excuse me, miss?"
panel 2: the first kid, who just called out, says "siiix-seeeven!" while doing the 6-7 gesture, the second one drinks a soda, and the third looks stony-faced
panel 3: zala does the 6-7 gesture back
panel 4: one boy erupts into laughter, another does a spit take, and the third smiles, eyes wide with surprise

There’s tech being worked on to make non fossil ammonia, if we lived in a sane world thst would currently be getting manhattan project style support

With the power of TradVibes, the negative health effects of excess saturated fat and char marks are totally nullified

“We need to get the food supply no longer dependent on a highly regional, polluting, rapidly depleting substance whose steady supply is getting less and less consistent” seems like a winning thing to campaign on, esp now

One ton of ammonia produces around 2 of co2-overall co2 from the industry is about the same as the entire airplane industry. It’d right up with steel and concrete for me as criminally under discussed sources of co2 pollution, but clearly it’s far more the fragility we need to worry about short term

It’s def covered by u under economically, but specifically the dependency we currently have on Haber Bosching fossil fuels for agricultural ammonia seems REALLY OBVIOUSLY INSANE especially after recent events. Half our food is utterly dependent on that.

I’m hoping that glass memory technology gets commercialized someday, would be perfect for music or copies of literary works, burning a bunch of cool media stuff with lasers into a crystal forever is absolute wizard shit

west, we need to reign in renewables so they are properly accountable for negative externalities

Sodium ion batteries are not as vulnerable to fire as lithium but they certainly can be a safety hazard, I do think siting them needs to be regulated quite strongly. Overall I think that’s likely to be a continuing challenge here in the

Wind power certainly helps with that. You are right that battery manufacture is imperfect, but given it needs to happen at scale no matter what power generation method we use prevails cleaning it up is necessary under both power regimes.

I’d be delighted if nuclear tech could make a comeback in the west fwiw, if given access to a Time Machine I’d beg for it to be rolled out at scale back in the day.

3 days ago 1 0 0 0

Wow 1/6 the price over about a decade is pretty striking-but I was talking about sodium ion tech, which CATL said would get down to 10$ per kWh. Of course skepticism is reasonable, but if that does come to pass it’s pretty astonishing, it would be 1/30 the cost of battery storage in 2013

i Really hope we see more intermittentcy optimized uses for power surpluses that currently get curtailed-think of how much clean nitrogen fertilizer we could make with excess wind and solar power, or a hundred other beneficial things

3 days ago 0 0 1 0

Given just how cheap sodium ion batteries are poised to get, and the progress on advanced geothermal seems to me a mix of 80-90% renewables and the remaining percentage some kind of clean baseload would be ideal, but at the end of the day whatever works.

I do feel bad for people who need to drive rn and have low wage jobs, god willing cheap as dirt EVs and better public transit get a huge boost from this shit.

Spin gravity, highly circular food and water systems, algae based bioreactors for carbon dioxide processing and oxygen production-fascinating stuff with near term application in many cases…but in this context it’s all lost in shallow sci fi spectacle as consumed by uncurious dolts

Sad shit. I’ve often looked into the problems and potential solutions to things like human space habitats, something about only engaging with that via slop regurgitation instead of looking a scholarship is very sad

I thank you for this. It is going way over my head but it is very interesting.i am saddened you and other scholars have been harassed by weird tech booster types while simply calling for thoughtfulness and skepticism.

A jumping Spider the size of my fingertip is utterly incapable of being built from scratch by all the assembled scientists and engineers on earth….but we think we can create something billions of times more complex by rejiggering chatbots?
