Sorry I missed this!
8am on a frosty morning. The morning light not yet showing the sunrise. A small child wearing a pink puffy coat & matching helmet with a Hey Dougie backpack rides a small 16” wheeled bike with streamers on the handlebars. She’s on a newly built bike lane about to cross a bridge. For context, her mother runs alongside on the pavement just out of frame. There is a road marker showing a bike indicating this segregated cycle lane is for two wheels only. And this little girl is alone on the path riding towards the future.
This.
This right here is why proper cycling infrastructure is an investment in our communities and our future.
It is only the beginning. This route isn’t even fully finished.
When we stop imagining and start doing, change happens.

In 1979 there are cars parked on both sides of the road, with ars driving on the tram track and people cycling between them. Today the street is pedestrianised, with two tram tracks
Reguliersbreestraat, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. Once two car-parking lanes, a single tram line with cars queueing on it, and bikes squeezed between it all. Now it’s two tram lines with generous pedestrian space. Cities reflect the priorities of the politicians who shaped them.

This article from @threadinburgh.scot is a jolly read. But when you get to the end, you realise that it is making a point that should worry all of us, even if we are not interested in the history of large suburban villas in #Edinburgh .

We do not need new roads; we need better transport options. Think of what could be done with £9.2bn, which is to be spent on just 14 miles of road! It could transform bus services and/or cycling and pedestrian infrastructure across Britain. www.theguardian.com/business/202...
