I stumbled upon Bregman’s writing through *Humankind*, which I liked for its optimistic view.

His De geschiedenis van de vooruitgang (in Dutch only): progress is real, but not guaranteed - and it's on us to preserve it.

πŸ†•πŸ”ͺ Mission Kitchen on Valencia street is now open (daily from 7am).

We had breakfast there today, and while it was a bit cold inside, the food was great!

Their original location on Mission street usually has a long queue, so go check this new spot out too.

Uber should be offering Uber Canoe rides from SFO right now!

US-101 from SFO to the city was a nice area to paddle through.

πŸ€˜πŸ“– A few years ago I bounced off the TV series Daisy Jones & The Six… turns out I just didn’t like it in a visual format.

The audiobook? Loved it. Full cast, great cadence, and a real page-turner - even if the reveal felt anticlimactic.

Just finished Fugitive Telemetry - a novella where Murderbot helps unravel a murder on a space station. Interesting plot, but the self-narration by now feels repetitive. Still fun, but hope future entries pick up the pace.

In Noe Valley and missing Mr Digby's?

Well, that spot on the corner of 24th and Church is now home to Grand Lake Kitchen.

After two restaurants in Oakland, this is their first San Francisco location. So go check it out!

The Murderbot Diaries are one of my favs, too. If you like world-building fantasy, check out @marthawells.com other series: Books of the Raksura. Another amazing series.

I've been thinking of this audio compression approach.

In a voice chat app, take someone's voice audioοΉ make a model out of it.

Then:

1. Transcribe what they say
2. Send the text to the receiver
3. Play it as text-to-speech with the custom model

Has this been tried? Any good?

Firestore's count API gets expensive fast.

Here's a neat trick:
* estimate the document count from just 100-200 IDs
* at a fixed cost, no matter how large the collection

πŸ™οΈπŸŒ The walkway of the sky bridge at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a mesh that you can somewhat see through. 🫣

Depending on whether you're afraid of heights: don't (forget to) look down! πŸ—οΈπŸ™οΈ

Closing in on the SFMOMA sky bridge, you really can't miss the artwork installed on it:

πŸŒˆπŸŒ‰ Olafur Eliasson's "One-way colour tunnel."

It looks simple from close up, but it affords even more spectacular views.

πŸ“–πŸ‘ My take: the usual plot twists, jokes, and mockery of established tropes are all here - but the plot felt a bit less interesting than Pratchett’s later books. Not a bad Discworld novel, just not my favorite.

πŸ‘‘πŸ—‘οΈ Wyrd Sisters has a rather Shakespearean plot: a king is murdered by his duke, but the heir survives - rescued by the witches and placed with a troupe of traveling actors. Fast-forward 15 years, and they try to restore the rightful king. Will they succeed?

πŸ₯πŸ§™β€β™€οΈ Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters is the 6th novel in the Discworld series and his 2nd one about the witches (after Equal Rites). Granny Weatherwax returns, alongside newcomers Magrat and fan-favorite Nanny Ogg.

Plot summary and my take πŸ‘‡ in 🧡.

πŸ“šπŸˆβ€β¬› Just read Crucible in the Awaken Online book series

Jason becomes a dungeon master with the help of the Cadys, other avatars, and (increasingly) Alex.

Fascinating plot developments, emotional twists, and a great cliffhanger.

Nice!

I'm glad that you actually benefit from this change, as it feels very much like a paper upgrade for me (for the next 20-30 years or so, at least). πŸ˜‰

Google increased the amount of storage you get on its AI pro plan from 2TB to 5TB.

After >20 years I now use 55GB, mostly Photos and Drive. πŸ˜…

If this increase makes any difference to you: what on earth do you store in Google Drive?!? πŸ“ˆ

This is probably my favorite chart/stat on GoodReads: when a book was published vs when I read it.

Anyone want to take a guess what that bottom (oldest) blue dot there is?
