Sandhill Cranes have made a massive comeback in Ontario, with populations growing over 700% in some regions, particularly in Northern and Eastern Ontario, where they breed and stage. Due to increased crop damage, a limited hunting season is proposed for 2026.
We had a rare visitor of late that delighted many birders, especially when it was closer for better views. Ross’s Geese (Anser rossii) visit Ontario, primarily as rare migrants during spring and fall, with increasing sightings over the past 30 years.
The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large, common wading bird in Ontario, often seen in shallow water, marshes, and shorelines, especially starting in early April. They stand 97–137 cm tall with, grey-blue plumage, a dagger-like bill, and hunt by standing still to catch fish.
Deadline has been extended to April 24!

"We need economic solutions that work in harmony with nature, not in conflict," - @ontarionature.bsky.social's Tony Morris. @anushkayadav.bsky.social reports that Ontario's 2026 budget doubles down on highways while sidelining climate and biodiversity.

Ontario has officially scrapped its Endangered Species Act replacing it with weaker protections.
LAND Lawyer Kerrie Blaise points out that applications for work that could potentially harm wildlife no longer have to be posted for public review and comment. "How are people supposed to weigh in?"
Lots of Hooded Mergansers around, Eastern Phoebe calling in the background.
Today an Eastern Phoebe landed right beside my car window :). how lucky
🚨 The Ontario government has repealed the Endangered Species Act, leaving at-risk birds & fish unprotected and creating a dangerous gap in protection.

Spring migration is underway—and Little Lake was full of life this weekend! Birders counted hundreds of Ring-necked Ducks along with Hooded and Common Mergansers, Buffleheads, Scaup, and Grebes. Overhead, a Bald Eagle, a Merlin, and a Great Blue Heron passed by, while River Otters, a Mink, and a Muskrat were spotted along the shoreline. Events like Return of the Birds to Little Lake are a reminder of just how much wildlife passes through our region each spring. Hundreds of people gathered along the waterfront this weekend for Return of the Birds to Little Lake, celebrating the first wave of spring migration. Visitors at the docks of the Canadian Canoe Museum and Mark Street Wharf had the chance to view returning waterfowl through high-powered scopes and learn about the incredible journeys these birds make each year. “Seeing so many people gather along the waterfront to watch these birds on their journey north was truly encouraging,” said PFN president Sue Paradisis. Meanwhile inside the Canadian Canoe Museum, visitors explored a special display of beautifully carved and mounted birds by local taxidermist Ken Morrison—whose lifetime of work includes more than 200 birds prepared for the Royal Ontario Museum. Thank you to everyone who came out to welcome spring and experience the wonder of migration with us. #ReturnOfTheBirds #LittleLake #PeterboroughON #BirdMigration #BirdingOntario #NatureInTheCity The Canadian Canoe Museum @silverbeancafe

Bring the kids and discover the Birds of Little Lake! Our Return of the Birds to Little Lake event is a great way for families to experience spring migration together. For a few weeks each year, Little Lake becomes a stopover for migrating ducks and geese heading north. At the festival, experienced birders will have spotting scopes set up to help visitors get close-up views of the birds on the lake and learn how to identify them. Kids often love seeing how different the ducks look through a scope — and how many species they can spot! The province is asking conservation authorities to identify lands for development. These places protect us from flooding and support biodiversity. We need stronger protections, not sell-offs!
