Digging through databases of birth & marriage records from the 1800s. It's really interesting to compare/contrast differing conventions & assumptions across regions

Reading a study (which will remain anonymous, though if you know me you might be able to guess) in which the authors MANUALLY checked >15k DOIs against an open database.

I just keep thinking, "but Python is free!"

Any recs for yarn shops in the DC area? (I'll be in Crystal City, so bonus points for near there or transit-accessible from there) 🧶

A table, outdoors, with a grouping of items: 6 apples labeled with their varieties, an apple-sized rock (labeled "ROCK") and a small pumpkin (labeled "NOT AN APPLE")

Opinion: Exploitation persists in academic science—here’s what we can do The scientific community must value mentorship, enforce accountability, and make graduate students’ well-being central

"It is time to build a culture where mentorship is valued, accountability is real, and the success of our research is not paid for with broken people." An excellent read.

I have actually been been working with collaborators on an analysis of the contents of LibGen's SciMag! I can drop you a line when the conference proceedings go live if you're interested.

AN EXPLANATORY NOTE by the German translator of this book drawn from an account requested of its author: "'As you supposed, the dedication is indeed to my three children, listed in order of birth, and then, as you could not easily surmise, to their fifteen cats (not, as you understandably inferred, to fifteen grandchildren). The allusion would be understood at once by close friends. Still, others can find a clue in the antonymic "Effable Three ... and Their Ineffable Fifteen." For those paired adjectives of course echo T.S. Eliot's "The Naming of Cats" in his unforgettable Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., 1967, twenty-first printing), which was read successively and often by each of The Effable Three. A further clue is provided by my confession, in the note on page 71, that in my middle years I became "a confirmed ailurophile."

If I didn't already like the author's sense of humor this would be a great hint I was going to (From Robert K. Merton's "On the Shoulders of Giants")

The problem with doing a lit review for a paper is all the new, shinier ideas it sparks for *other* studies. Must...focus...

It's adorable when Zotero warns me I have retracted articles in my library when I'm actively tracking down a group of retractions

Hanging out on Bluesky has been surprisingly helpful in learning to craft appropriate image alt text for other venues
