E, my six-yo, is mostly around shes, gays, and theys, which is probably why he now says “OK, Girlfriend” to everything.
Mayor Goodway is an attempt by the anti-DEI folks to brainwash children into thinking women of color are incapable leaders.
This is only partly a joke.
My kindergartner went to a Jewish daycare and pre-K so this is his first school Valentine’s Day.
He would like to give out flower legos made of gemstones with the cards.
Yep, right on finding this thing that definitely exists.
Longtime fans will remember my
six-year-old taught his class H-O-T-T-O-G-O.
Next up, “Backrolls”. Teach the children!
Too much of Evangelical Christianity has relegated Jesus to footnote in the service of power.
There are many great parts of Kings of Tupelo but one of the best is watching ol’ Roger get caught on camera in a bald-faced lie.
Usually I wait for mid-March to have my legislative session meltdown, but right now I’m thinking next Tuesday looks pretty good.
Policies stuck in the 1850s, makeup stuck in 2010s.
No one is coming to save us, especially when us is LGBTQIA+, undocumented, not Christian….
Certainly not the SCOTUS.
Certainly not the media.
Certainly not Congress.
1/2 Here’s the number one thing those who want to effectively oppose Trumpism 2.0 have to learn yesterday -
INSTITUTIONS ARE JUST PEOPLE. NORMS ARE ENFORCED BY PEOPLE
You cannot rely on either. Stop saying “he can’t do that” and start saying “we aren’t going to let him do that.”
Having lived in Mississippi for five years and worked in their legislature, you really have to check their most absurd laws to see who wrote them. If it’s a Dem, it’s usually a great troll.
Even Jon Stewart fell for Sen Steve Holland’s gags all the time.
Elon is really the one with an incredible grift here. He’s selling electric cars in the name of climate change, while helping to accelerate climate change.
100%. I grew up in evangelicalism and married into Judaism. Christianity is the default culture, particularly here in the South.
Not only that, but it has been so pervasive that a lot of its tenets seep into secular culture - particularly beliefs about goodness relative to wealth.
Yes! I’m so bored by it. It’s just overproduced auto tune. Throw a toaster in a bath, dammit.
I’m a single issue voter and that issue is that we need to ban lipsynchs to original
songs in the RPDR talent show episodes.
Has anyone decrying the “DEI” firefighters in the LAFD seen their resumes and qualifications to determine that they are unqualified, or are they just going off of vibes?
(By vibes I mean skin color and gender)
Sometimes when I’m separating my recycling or carrying out my compost I think about the 300k extra gallons of water the Kardashians used during a drought and how they are definitely getting on the ship to Mars over me.
grappling with the implications of The Claims Adjuster turning out to be a hot Italian tech bro gym rat who went to Penn, seems to have had a pretty gnarly back injury, retweets anti-woke nonsense, and has read not one but two books by Steve-O
I knew the UHC shooter was young because no one over 30 is staying at a hostel. I would have been caught for using my hotel awards # to get points.
Attorney General Matt Gaetz has brought down his first and last sex criminal, Attorney General Matt Gaetz.
And Paul. They love that dude.
Me on Zoom: sorry my dog is barking
(Actually we don’t have a dog. It’s my two-year-old pretending to be a dog. And now she’s rolling over for tummy skritches)
Key to this is quoting what he’s actually said, and not sane washing it with “RFK has some unorthodox opinions about vaccines and fluoride in drinking water”.
(2/2) Ray Christian is a Black Veteran, Fulbright Scholar, and Appalachian. He tells stories of our beautiful Blue Ridge through the lens of Black life.
Separately, one morning, I listened to a story about Tupperware’s arriving India. 10/10.
How are y’all maintaining sanity?
What I’m not doing is listening to the news in my free time. Because I know. I was here in 2016 and I’ll find out from Politico. What I AM doing is discovering the delights of PRX in the morning. Particularly a show called “What’s Ray Saying?” (1/2)
This was a very small sample for another project - and we didn’t report on the crypto piece - but it kept coming up over and over again in the conversations I was observing. Interesting stuff!
When we did focus groups of low-income Black women post-COVID, we were shocked by the number who talked about using their stimulus checks to invest in crypto. It wasn’t even something we thought to ask about.
Writing on predatory lending once again today, and thinking of all the gains that will be lost in this next administration.
Nothing pithy to say about 400% loans I’m afraid.
