Wow congrats Adam!
Selfie in my bathrobe with my headlamp around my neck, a scenery panel I’m working on showing in the background.
Closeup of the scenery panel showing about half of the stencil removed, revealing yellow constellations over the Hawaiian textile pattern.
Carousel crafting on the patio in my bathrobe—chilly tonight! Gotta call it for tonight but looking gooood! This particular stencil comes off much faster than it went on.
You know, I’ve been really enjoying my solo nighttime carousel painting but a real downside to doing it on the patio is that it’s next to Ian’s window so I can’t sing out loud to my jams.
The scenery area on the panel is completely covered in a long, continuous stencil showing a Hawaiian textile pattern with 5 embedded line-shapes that will outline the star lines.
The completed second layer of stencil. Took a long time to place, but didn’t require too many snips and tweaks to lay flat and aligned.
Little tour of all the completed stencils on Celeris, named for the foal of Pegasus and Equleus constellation and themed after the work of Greek astronomer and mathematician Hipparchus who named said constellation. Now just to finish the color on the rest of the body :) #SciArt #SkyhorseCarousel
Amy, as always, you are so talented :D
Process of the Artemis II Earthset Plate
Thanks for following this body of work, it was an inspiring project for me!

📍 Artemis II from the far side of the Moon
Scenery panel showing a layer of pale yellow paint with a stencil of a spider over a diagram of the ecliptic and ecliptic constellations as if it is climbing among them.
The next step, showing that blue has been painted over the top of the spider and a new stencil lain over the top. This stencil shows a traditional Hawaiian textile pattern, and embedded within is a hook-like shape that is one of their star lines.
The Hawaiian panel depicts the ecliptic, called Ke Ala a Ke Kuʻukuʻu ("Way of the Spider"). It’s very complex, using 2 layers of 3-panel stencils that must be placed just so.
I am, very appropriately, using the anchor stars in their navigational star lines to align them.

The side of the horse showing a copper and brass astrolabe over blue, with tiny yellow stars dotted throughout.
Ahhhh, the astrolabe turned out so good toooo! Also needs a few touchups, but fairly clean. I love it! I think the photo doesn’t quite convey the color and metallics perfectly, but still pretty :)
Diagram on the top of the saddle with all the stencils removed, showing the geometry of an eclipse
Decided to keep the blue as is—the eclipse diagram came out really good! Few little touchups needed, but very minor :) I’m very pleased!
Side view of the horse showing dark blue saddle blanket portions, each with stencils still visible under layers of paint.
I’m annoyed because I’ve been feeling unhappy with the shade of dark blue, but I already painted all the stars on the astrolabe and they look so good that I also don’t want to redo them. So I’ve been hesitant to pull all the stencils off but also hesitant to change the color. 🫤
Yeah pretty sure it’s a Parker! I felt pretty lucky to find a coin horse in a classic style, they’re less common around than just generic whatever shaped horses.
A mirror leaned against a stool in the sun casting light onto the side of the carousel horse in the shade.
I needed to see the colors in the sunlight but it’s too heavy to love alone, so I took a page out of a Zelda dungeon 🤣

I really enjoy using stencils. They can often require many steps to achieve, even with limited number of colors, especially since each one has to be sealed as it’s laid down. So there’s a lot of laying, painting, and waiting to dry till you can do the next. It’s kind of a fun puzzle too figure out.
Hahaha definitely would be the case, but thankfully our carousel is actually made of metal. The antique wooden machines are charming and beautiful but would never last outdoors.
Good lord, that does sound horrifying.

Putting flat stencils on curved saddles is always a fun challenge ;) Have to know exactly where to snip, stretch, extend/shorten to get it to look right. #SkyhorseCarousel #SciArt

Yay congrats!! 💜

Science is good. We should fund it.
I couldn’t catch it all in text, but that quote “From the pages of Jules Verne…” was a great sentiment.
