Dive into California’s kelp crisis: forests pushed into urchin barren collapse. The Giant Giant Kelp Restoration Project shows how action can get kelp “unstuck” and bring life back. 🌊 Will CA allow trained divers to help? Find out April 23 at Ocean Hoptimism.

“For a fault that has had so much attention, there’s so much we still don’t know.”
Read on to learn what scientists are still uncovering about the Seattle fault and the risks it poses to the Pacific Northwest.

A good look at the experiences of BIPOC faculty hired during the DEI push of 2020 & how the rhetoric of the universities that hired them matched the on the ground realities that these faculty experienced. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Humanity did that. Science did that. Publicly-funded research did that. Excellent universities did that. Diversity did that. International cooperation did that.
Artemis II is a perfect example of what we can do at our best.

Absolutely wild (not in a good way) to see the Department of Education posting about eliminating programs that help students from underrepresented backgrounds with such glee. www.ed.gov/about/news/p...

If you or a student you know are in need of financial support to attend a field camp this summer, check out this scholarship!
Shocked and disappointed that this is the language NSF is using for its 2027 budget request.

Carlos and I on Bird Rock.
Jason flying a drone.

Carlos looking at the intertidal.
Conducting drone surveys today on Catalina Island with my former undergrad & postdoc mentor Carlos Robles & my lab’s lead drone tech Jason Ching. We visited sites on Bird Rock that Carlos started studying in the early 1980s.
That’s cool. We definitely had a few people come check out the drone.
Sign posted at a beach next to our study site indicating a no drone zone.
Thanks to our research permit we were able to turn the no drone zone into a “yes, drone zone!!!”
It is the channel at Shaw’s Cove.
Two people watching a drone survey the rocky intertidal.
Drone pilot watching a drone takeoff.
Drone flying through the air with a palm tree in the background.
Drone on the ground waiting to takeoff.
Conducting drone surveys with my former postdoc advisor Carlos Robles in So. Cal. this week. First up Laguna Beach before heading to Catalina Island on Friday.

There’s this bright thing in the skies over the UW campus. It hurts the eyes.

A good look at the reluctance of universities to resume DEI efforts after the recent Department of Education ruling.
UNLV shark mascot with two UNLV players.
Funny enough UNLV used to have a shark mascot on the sidelines during their heydays in the 80’s & 90’s even though the team name is the Rebels. If I recall correctly the head coach’s nickname was Tark the Shark.
It really is that easy. There’s lots of great scientists from diverse backgrounds out there. There’s also plenty of great organizations & people out there who can help you connect with scientists in communities that can often be absent from conference panels.

So much to unpack here. From not knowing what DEI is to the lack of critical thought put into the job they were asked to do and what they were supposed to be looking for. My goodness.
Happy Women’s History Month! 💛
