Long ago I taught women’s self defense classes. One core principle for survivors we had was: if you are here and alive, you made the right choice at the time! I thought about this a lot with Hillary Clinton, did I love her tough on crime era? No! But she wouldn’t have been a presidential contender.

The internet seems to have decided that no child left behind was a law to force social promotion. Say what you will about NCLB, but that was not part of it. (I actually hate NCLB slightly less than most teachers, but so much of it was pretty stupid. But it was actively opposed to social promotion.)

A thing that jumped out for me is how often it comes down to an individual manager making decisions arbitrarily. Our work culture is broken in the U.S. I think we need explicit, enforced laws to teach appropriate management.

I remember going to day camp when I was in 1st or 2nd grade and I’d beg my mom to put me in a warm cozy sweat shirt so I didn’t freeze to death at the bus stop. But then it would be so hot I’d be miserable during the day. I wonder how many sweatshirts I lost at that camp?

Sometimes Minnesota weather is challenging. I was thinking I’d go for a long walk this morning. It’s 30 degrees now, but will be 60 in a few hours. How are you supposed to dress for that? (I know, the answer is layers.)

Try your local elementary art teacher. They’re great for dispensing tempera paint. You can also give them to your closest grocery co-op for people to self fill with bulk eggs. And food shelves.
