New book alert for all historians and literary scholars who care about early modern women: this is a brilliant and engaging look at one “forward woman” and her place in early seventeenth century English culture. New evidence, fresh perspective!

Please welcome Anne Southwell (1574-1636) to this space so that she can time travel into your feed with her extraordinary verse.

Especially when CBD does the same thing essentially and harmlessly.

Do you mean George or Mary Sidney Herbert?

Ahhhh, thank you. I did a keyword search for “slander” in Geneva (her preferred), and found Deuteronomy 22.17, which seems right. Strange that KJV avoids that word.

Thanks to you both! This is Anne Southwell in her poem on the 7th commandment. I’m still stuck on “slandered through grudge” - not sure how this works in those contexts. Or am I missing something?

Seeking the biblically literate: “Daughters of Israel, slandered through grudge / Had satisfaction given them by the Judge”. Thanks to anyone who can pin this down to chapter and verse!

Same here. But the only mention of 72 hours is the time between the original email and the signing request. Personally, I was planning to leave it in my inbox. . . . like, forever
