I am saddened to learn of William Connolly’s passing. I met him several times, attended some of his seminars at Johns Hopkins, and was invited to his and Jane Bennett’s home in Baltimore. He was a genuinely thoughtful and generous thinker, and he will be greatly missed.

Thematisch ähnlich, wenn auch etwas anders gelagert ist Agambens „anthropologische Maschine” in das "Offene”. Es geht dabei jedoch eher um die implizite, aber beständige Produktion der Unterscheidung zwischen Mensch und Tier in Theorien. Vielleicht hilft es dennoch weiter.

Die Rolle, die Waldenfels für Leute wie mich während des Studiums gespielt hat, ist heute kaum nachzuvollziehen. Er hat Themen und Theorien, die heute selbstverständlich sind, aber damals in der deutschen Diskussion verfehmt waren, legitimiert und somit für uns akademisch anschlussfähig gehalten.

In "Forschung & Lehre" fordert ein Kollege, (konservative) Meinungen als Teil von Diversität an Hochschulen zu verstehen. Das scheint mir ein Kategorienfehler zu sein. In der Wissenschaft geht es darum Meinungen zu überwinden, nicht sie zu institutionalisieren.

Hier noch einmal eine kurze Erinnerung an den Vortrag von Ralf Rapior heute um 18:15 Uhr, der auch auch online verfolgt werden kann.

That is why we know the book I acquired is one of 200 anastatic reproductions from 1905. Although it is a reproduction, it was published by the same publisher, with Tönnies's knowledge. He even refers to these reproductions in his publications.

Because of this process, anastatic prints have noticeably poorer, less sharp print quality than the original. This makes them identifiable.

Anastatic reproduction is a relatively inexpensive method for producing facsimiles and pirated editions. A printed page is acid-dampened and pressed onto zinc, where the ink protects the metal, creating a reversed relief plate for printing many copies.

In 1905, Reisland took a drastic and (for him) expensive step. With Tönnies's consent, he produced 200 anastatic reproductions of the 1887 original edition. However, he did not indicate that they were reproductions. In essence, he created a pirated version of the first edition.

In an attempt to resolve the situation, Reisland asked Tönnies for a revised version that could be published as a new edition. However, Tönnies refused and insisted on the existing contract.

Tönnies complained to Reisland for two reasons. First, the publisher never issued the agreed-upon print run of 1,000 copies. Second, Reisland destroyed a large number of the printed books.
