Sepia coloured photograph (face and bust) of William Caxton Peppe, c. 1890s, who excavated the jewels on sale.
'These wondrous gem relics, discovered in an inscribed reliquary urn with the Shakya clanâs share of the bones of Shakyamuni Buddha, are of unparalleled religious, archaeological and historical importance.' Quite a write-up by Sotheby's. www.sothebys.com/en/buy/aucti...
'In 1898, William Claxton PeppĂŠ, an English estate manager, excavated a stupa at Piprahwa, just south of Lumbini, where the Buddha is believed to have been born. He uncovered relics inscribed and consecrated nearly 2,000 years ago.' The word 'uncovered' is doing rather a lot of work here. 1/3
'As Hudson's Bay heads to court seeking permission to auction off 1,700 pieces of art and more than 2,700 artifacts, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs is requesting a halt to the sale of items that may belong to or be linked with First Nations people.' 1/2

Talking about teaching in non-admin higher ed doesnât mean that research is lauded & rewarded any less. No really, you can allow a thoughtful discussion about curriculum and pedagogy to happen without saying bUt WhAt AbOuT rEsEaRcH every single time.
'At least ÂŁ22,000 was spent by the Home Office on hiring lawyers in a failed attempt to prevent the release of a hard-hitting internal report that found that the roots of the Windrush scandal lay in 30 years of racist immigration legislation, officials have acknowledged this week.'

A book standing upright on multiple copies, which are laying next to a 1920s Underwood typewriter. The book cover is a faded and blurry background, with a photo of a personâs ear horizontal on the bottom, and text emitting from it to represent sound. The text in large font says âEchoes of Careâ followed by âDeafness in Modern Britainâ and the authorâs name, Jaipreet Virdi.
From an idea in 2008 to a book in 2025, ECHOES OF CARE: DEAFNESS IN MODERN BRITAIN has been published by @mcgillqueensup.bsky.social ! It explores how changing perceptions of deafness intersected with healthcare, disability, and eugenics in 19th-century Britain.
