Cot is my 2nd favorite. It's fantastic. Zed is a bit faster, has nicer simpler layout with better default fonts, and is built for AI.

Three open questions in polygenic score portability Nature Communications - Genetic predictors of health outcomes often drop in accuracy when applied to people dissimilar to participants of large genetic studies. Here, the authors investigate the...

Our work on the generalizability of polygenic scores (PGS) from the @arbelharpak.bsky.social Lab is now officially out!

We examine the accuracy of PGS predictions at the individual level. We make 3 observations that expose gaps in our understanding of PGS “portability.”

As a recipient of federal grants from #NIH (for now! 😭) that funds research in my lab, I'd like to sincerely thank American taxpayers on #TaxDay for investing in scientific research that lays the foundation for medical and technological innovation in this country and keeps us ALL safe and healthy

I went and saw Project Hail Mary.
A guy came in with his service dog and the dog sat there the whole time just concentrating on the movie.
Afterwards I told the guy I was amazed your dog watched the movie like that.
He replied, me too especially because he hated the book.

Family members concerned that their relative in hospital has delirium should assertively approach healthcare professionals and say, ""I think my relative has delirium."

Unfortunately #delirium is still missed, and informed families play an important role in advocating for their loved ones.

Path diagram of a structural equation model with three latent variables called ind60, dem60, and dem65. ind60 has three indicators, dem60 and dem65 each have four. dem65 is regressed on dem60 and ind60. dem60 is regressed on ind60.

So, a thread about how I have learned #SEM in #R as a #PhD student in #StatisticalGenetics.

I’ve heard SEM be described as a “system of regressions”, but in addition to observed variables, we also have latent/unobserved variables.

We can represent these variables in a path diagram (lavaan.org) :

What’s a multiverse good for anyway?

Julia M. Rohrer, Jessica Hullman, and Andrew Gelman

Multiverse analysis has become a fairly popular approach, as indicated by the present special issue on the matter. Here, we take one step back and ask why one would conduct a multiverse analysis in the first place. We discuss various ways in which a multiverse may be employed – as a tool for reflection and critique, as a persuasive tool, as a serious inferential tool – as well as potential problems that arise depending on the specific purpose. For example, it fails as a persuasive tool when researchers disagree about which variations should be included in the analysis, and it fails as a serious inferential tool when the included analyses do not target a coherent estimand. Then, we take yet another step back and ask what the multiverse discourse has been good for and whether any broader lessons can be drawn. Ultimately, we conclude that the multiverse does remain a valuable tool; however, we urge against taking it too seriously.

5 Things We Learned About Journal Peer Review in 2025 - Absolutely Maybe Back in 2019 I wrote a couple of posts summarizing what we had learned from research about peer review at journals. Since…

Lots to think about in my annual roundup of peer review research:
- AI, mostly bad; some suggestions of ways it may help
- Evidence on financial rewards for peer review
- Influence of editors' biases
More on equity & diversity; librarians & systematic reviews

Plot of modeling new NIH grants after a switch to 100% MYF. There is a large drop in grants in the first year with a gradual recovery over 5 years.

There is a lot of talk lately about multi-year funding (MYF) at NIH. This is mostly a paperwork issue, but it can have a dramatic impact on the number of grants that get funded. I was curious how this would impact grant numbers over time, so I did some simple modeling. 1/n

National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

The way I see it, we have a few options:

1. General strike

2. Mass protests in DC for as long as it takes

3. Wait for Republicans to protect the country and therefore lose the country

No one is coming to save us.
