What I Mean When I Say I'm Tired

I don't mean I want to sleep.
I mean I want to disappear for a while.
To be rain on a stranger's roof.
To be smoke rising from someone else's fire.
I don't want to die.
But I do want to rest in a way
the world has never allowed me.
I don't want comfort.
I want quiet.
I want the mercy of being unseen
without being unloved.

long stretch of worked roman stone on Hadrian's Wall.

long stretch of worked roman stone on Hadrian's Wall.

If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it.

Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

The plum you're going to eat next summer doesn't exist yet; its potential lives inside a tree you'll never see
in an orchard you'll never see, will be touched by a certain number of water droplets before it reaches you, by certain angles of light, by a finite amount of bugs and dust motes and hands you'll never know. The plum you are going to eat next summer will gather sugar, gather mass, will harden at its center so it can soften toward your mouth. The plum you're going to eat next summer doesn't know you exist. The plum you are going to eat next summer is growing just for you.

I think I must be very lucky so far to never have had a parent take issue with my library’s manga/GN/comics collection or their kids reading them, but I have definitely had teachers do the ‘oh choose a proper book’ thing to students they’ve brought to the library on a few occasions 🙃

A two panel comic of Loki from A Bad God's Guide to Being Good. In the first panel he's looking breezy and innocent and holding up a book. He's saying, "I think it's great that children read prose novels." In the second panel, he's looking more mischievous and saying, "It's a perfectly GATEWAY to comics."

Let's kill "comics are a gateway to reading" dead please?

These predictions were made either through my own reading and judgement, knowledge of books/authors/themes, or the popularity of specific books in my school library (Wolf Siren and Shrapnel Boys being so popular I’ve yet to nab them for a weekend 😅)

My #Carnegies2026 predictions lists! I do this every year but this is the most I’ve been successful with ever, both at longlist & shortlist. Definitely need to read Popcorn & Lizard Nobody as those seem to have slipped under my radar! Fantastic to see more funny & genre books making shortlist too!
