Honestly, I have my doubts that their classification as a benefit corporation doing anything meaningful, but yeah it should be pretty easy to switch especially if it implodes. Though, I'd wager they'll eventually go towards advertisements, considering how profitable it would be for them.
In short, Bluesky is not properly federated. With the recent outage (which appears to have been a DDoS attack), it shows just how decentralized some people's favorite 'decentralized social media' is.
Oh, and Bluesky is VC funded as well. It'll go to shit eventually.

This is because data relays act more like a "stockpile" of posts, images, and replies; rather than a more truly federated platform like ActivityPub (what Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Lemmy use under the hood). I keep seeing this misconception pop up around here and with its userbase, and it is ANNOYING.
Furthermore, the system itself outside of not being competitive from what I've heard has some serious chokepoints for being properly decentralized. Namely, the fact that data relays are EXPENSIVE AS HELL to run due to the insane storage requirements.

I think this is especially relevant considering the recent outage. ATProto also DOES NOT have a properly decentralized handle system (namely the DID system).
