Lady Bird Johnson said “The environment is where we all meet; it is the one thing we all share.” Today we are more focused on the LACK of common ground with our fellow humans. As we reflect on this Earth Day, let’s remember that everyone needs clean air & clean water to thrive.

“Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years. Reducing greenhouse gases requires honesty, courage and responsibility. Those who will have to suffer the consequences will not forget this failure of conscience and responsibility.” — Pope Francis
If even one person aboard can remain calm, lucid, knowing what to do, they can help the boat survive. Their expression communicates clarity & calmness: people trust & will listen to them.
One person can save the lives of many.
We are in a storm.
We must be the leader we need right now.
Buddhist master Thíct Nhất Hạnh wrote about steady leadership in life-threatening circumstances:
Boat people left Vietnam in small boats, often caught in rough seas. Some may panic & boats sink.
Do you like to swim, drink water, eat healthy food? None of that happens without clean water. clean water is the true “all of the above” fuel for our future.
Excellent opinion piece about 1/20/2025.
“The ultimate measure of a [person] is not where [they stand] in moments of comfort and convenience, but where [they stand] at times of challenge and controversy.”

This is leadership-thank you @edgarmcgregor.bsky.social! We need a well funded NOAA Weather Service that can go as hyper local in both research & sharing information.
During his run for president, Jimmy Carter was asked how would side between economic growth & environmental quality. “I want to make it clear if there is ever a conflict, I will go for beauty, clean air, water and landscape.” That choice also leads to a strong economy. It isn’t zero sum.
Former President Jimmy Carter's work on energy efficiency and renewable energy were criticized, but it laid the groundwork for the country to address climate change now.
"I have one life and one chance to make it count for something. I’m free to choose that something … my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I can, whenever I can, for as long as I can."
— Undated quote, cited by Carter's niece at Maranatha Baptist Church on Feb. 19, 2023. (AP)
"The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices."
— Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize address.
He stood among us, told us to fight for what we believed, wanted from our country, and FOR our future. Jimmy Carter was a caring, honest, honorable, passionate, dedicated person and our country is better for his leadership, faith, and devotion. May we all work to be good & faithful servant leaders.
President Jimmy Carter was a staple of my Emory University experience. As a Philosophy/Ecology co-major & Poli-Sci minor, he guest lectured once/semester. He was so generous to Emory, the students, & our missions including agreeing to be the keynote speaker at Emory's #EarthDay1990 celebration.
“I already know that” is simply silly. We need to be learning something new every day. This list can start your 2025 New Year’s resolution goal to learn more and use that knowledge to make the world a better place/fight off narrow thinking.

“If Bluesky turns out to be a long-term home for political conversation, it will be because, as also happened on early Twitter, the new arrivals create appealing new habits and norms, not just new content,” Clay Shirky writes in a guest essay.
Renewable energy companies around the world are working to recycle old solar panels and wind turbine blades, as the industry battles criticism that old equipment is piling up in landfills.
The best and hardest decision a community must make is to own that it may have an ending. New Orleans is leading and needs to be our example.

A group of people next to about with oyster shells. Text says: The Atakapa-Ishak/Chawasha tribe is building reefs out of oyster shells to protect their lands on the Louisiana coast.

About 22 hours and 17 years ago, I went into labor to give birth to Coleman P. Coleman continues to grow into a brilliant, kind, passionate person working to widen my perspective, show kindness to others (along with eye rolls to me), and keep me from being/acting like/becoming… “Karen”.
Every city should do this. There are more trails than we know and cities can often easily address difficult crossing to join two green spaces separated by a highway. That’s an easy way for cities to promote public health. How can we help @cityofMobile?
