Law enforcement using tear gas, rubber bullets and physical force against peaceful activists trying to rescue puppies from hellish and probably illegal confinement in Ridglan 'farm' tells you everything. One of those things is that Ridglan's days are numbered.

I really hope the animal advocates prevail. Both the Australian courts and legislature have been cartoonishly authoritarian in the past when it comes to cracking down on the speech rights of animal advocates.
Just what we don't need. Already, our rivers are overloaded with both human and livestock waste, leading in many cases to #rivercide. Now the government, responding as always to lobbyists, wants to make it worse. Then it wonders why it loses public support. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
A really superb presentation on 'animal legal individualhood' from @marciagovinda.bsky.social:

Last weekend, dozens of compassionate animal lovers went to Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin to rescue beagles suffering in cages, destined to be tortured in experiments.
— 22 dogs were safely rescued
— The police seized 8 dogs & returned them to Ridglan
Write up by defence barrister Samuel March about the recent jury acquittal of puppy rescuers:
"where appropriate circumstances are known or believed to exist, taking steps to rescue animals is at least capable of amounting to a defence to dishonesty offences"

The closing speeches of the two self-represented defendants are truly beautiful. I would have felt utterly miserable if the jury had convicted in this case. So happy they didn't! blog.simpleheart.org/p/the-trial-...

Absolutely wonderful news!
Really excellent article from Angela Fernandez and Justin Marceau about a new @aaldp-du.bsky.social and @nonhumanrights.bsky.social lawsuit to free dogs confined in horrendous (and likely illegal) conditions:

"Pigs are widely recognised by scientists as one of the most intelligent and emotionally complex domestic animals on Earth, yet tens of millions of them spend their lives in industrial agriculture systems that leave little room for curiosity, play, or basic comfort."

What has the European Convention on Human Rights ever done for anyone in Britain?
On this day in 1982, the @echr.coe.int ruled that teachers hitting kids in UK state schools was not OK👇

Vegans are sometimes accused of ‘forcing’ their beliefs on others (in reality they are just making ethical arguments against animal exploitation). The opposite is the case: vegans are forced to subsidise products that they’re morally opposed to.
The next Talking Animals talk will be delivered by our Centre's Visiting Researcher, Marcia Condoy Truyenque (PhD candidate @helsinki.fi).
Marcia will present “Animal Legal Individualhood: A comprehensive conception of individuality for animals in the law” on 27 Feb. at 5pm (UK time) on Zoom (1/2)
Delighted to have received the first copies of my new book (co-edited with John Olusegun Adenitire) on fundamental rights for non-humans - covering animal rights, rights of nature, and AI rights. Many thanks to the wonderful team @hartpublishing.bsky.social and our excellent contributors!

I cannot get over how stupid this is. The court basically interprets the word 'designation' to mean 'any word used in relation to a product'. So if Oatly said 'this product is not milk, it's an oat based drink' under the SC's logic they would be designating their product as milk! Aaaaaaaaghhhhh!
Just an unbelievably idiotic ruling, one of the worst I've seen from the UKSC. If somebody called themselves a 'Post-Marxist' or a 'Post-liberal' nobody who has a basic grasp of English would think they were 'designating' themselves as Marxists or Liberals!
The meaning of words is to be decided not by their use, usefulness, or history, but by their commercial benefit to the most powerful lobby groups. I have a recipe for almond milk in a cookbook from 1226. It has been used as a term in English for hundreds of years.

Over at the bad place senior figures in Reform are calling for universities to be defunded if their student societies don't want to invite Reform MPs onto campus. Our sector is in crisis but a future Reform government would try and murder it, Trump style.
Today, The Animal Law Foundation has written to the government alongside @leagueacs.bsky.social and 60 other signatories who are calling on the government to put animals back into The Animal Welfare Act.
See who has signed 🧵👇
