The main achievements thanks to Reza Zolala, who did this during his PhD project at EFS with help and supervision from Pierre Mangin and Véronique HEIM. And thanks to Cécile DENIS and Peter Lenting for VWF assays and discussions!
At pediatric-level flow rates over 48 h, we observed about a one-third reduction in hemolysis, while platelet function remained normal. While further clinical studies are needed, we believe this technology could be an important step toward safer, more gentle extracorporeal circulation in the future.
This “magnetostaltic” pumping method significantly reduced damage to red blood cells as compared with standard centrifugal and peristaltic pumps in ex vivo tests using human blood.

We report a new approach to blood pumping for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) that uses magnetic liquid interfaces instead of solid mechanical parts to move blood.
