I prefer 1, but you could also try smth inbetween like a darker outline, but not as black as the foreground elements.

Found my first #GameMaker game that I made when I was 14-15 years old (almost 20 years ago👀)! Started as a snake clone with a burning yellow smiley running over oil puddles and then got a spooky retexture featuring Valnar from Vampires Dawn.
