Just looking at this makes me grab the armrests of my chair so I don't fall.

Interesting how many of us old retired brains are plugging away at 'big books' - I wonder if the cameraderie and support of this thread makes us more willing to try.

Oh, yeah, the text-to-voice things can get really funky sometimes. I'm a Librivox girl myself for older stuff, listening while reading (helps me stay focused) but I don't always admit it ;)

Book Cover

I just started book 6 of Thucydides - progress!
And I also started a new transit book - When We Cease to Understand the World by Benjamín Labatut, translated from the original Spanish by Adrian Nathan West. Sort of a fictionalization of the Great Equations book, very interesting!

David M. Rubin: Junk Birds and Other Stories (Stackfreed Press, 2024) [IBR2026] I’ve spent most of my life looking for connections, patterns, and meaning in science and business, and this passion extends to art, literature, and philosophy. Our ability to generate meaning from …

“That is amazing. Absolutely nothing has changed, yet everything is different.”

The world’s oldest chicken lives in Portland. Her name is Gertie. Guinness World Records has recognized a blind, jazz-loving, 15-year-old hen in Portland as the oldest living chicken on Earth.

Does anyone else wonder what their mail carrier thinks is going on with all the books arriving all the time?

1 week ago 2 0 0 0

Yeah, it's weird. I just bought that book, do you really think I'm going to buy it again?

You know, Thriftbooks, you really don't have to ad me so hard, considering I buy something from you pretty much every month. Every week sometimes.

I used to live in Quincy, MA - that's KWINN-zee, not KWIN-see.
Our basketball team was the Keltics, not the Seltics.
Here in Maine, we have BER-lin and CALLous, not Berlin and Calais.

It's very strange reading about the Melian Dialogue at this point in time - and realizing I'm part of the wrong side.

That reminds me - a few years ago Nicole Krauss had a TNY story about A Taste of Cherry - or, more accurately, about Homayoun Ershadi. I knew/know nothing about it so it didn't register, but you might find it interesting.
