LAPD encroaches on the Echo Park Lake encampment late at night on March 24, 2021.
On March 24, 2025, O'Farrell ordered 400+ cops to raid Echo Park Lake. LAPD assaulted tenants and protestors, breaking the arm of Street Watch LA organizer, Isaac Scher.
The encampment grew into a safe haven for many who lost housing while escaping domestic violence or after COVID-related layoffs and evictions.
This thriving community created a jobs program, community garden, hot-water showers, a kitchen, and much more.

On March 24 and 25, 2021, Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell ordered the militarized eviction of the community that made Echo Park Lake their home for 18 months.
O'Farrell is gone, but the eviction's violent legacy of criminalization and displacement continues in his former district and beyond.

Tenants in Los Angeles & 87 other cities, not just unincorporated LA County, need protections!

to demand that they use their power under the state of emergency that they declared in October to protect tenants across the county!
Today the Board strengthened protections for tenants in unincorporated areas. We showed up to demand county-wide protections, and in response Lindsey Horvath said she will introduce a motion, to be voted on next week, to raise the evictable rent debt threshold to 3 months' FMR for the entire county.
ICE has been attacking our region since June and thousands of street vendors, day laborers, and immigrant businesses are struggling to pay the rent. Still, no rent relief has been distributed.
We demand the BOS increase the rent debt threshold to three months' rent for all of LA County!
On Tuesday's BOS agenda is a motion to increase the threshold to two months for unincorporated LA County. But the BOS has emergency powers under the state of emergency it passed in October, meaning it can
pass protections for the entire county - all 88 cities including the City of LA!
In L.A. City, we have an "evictable rent debt threshold": a tenant has to owe more than one month's fair market rent to be evicted. In unincorporated LA County they have the same protection.
🚨 Support immigrants who have lost work & are facing eviction!
On Tuesday the LA County Board of Supervisors will vote on whether to increase the amount a tenant has to be behind on rent before a landlord can evict them. We demand county-wide protections!

On Wednesday, Renee Macklin Good was fatally shot by a federal ICE agent. Becca Good, her wife, shared the following statement with MPR News.
Tonight, I was one of more than 200 people who gathered on Chicago’s North Side to mourn Renee Nicole Good. Several people asked me to publish my remarks from the vigil, so I’m sharing them here.
ICE murdered someone in cold blood today.

"We had never operated ICE watch patrols, but we were able to do it. And here’s the great thing: you don’t have to do it alone. You don’t have to figure out all of this from scratch, because we’re here to support you.”

"This is New York’s first portfolio-wide union in recent memory, and surely the first to be built at such dizzying scale: In a matter of months, 40 Pinnacle buildings across 3 boroughs have formed tenant associations and joined the union to coordinate their demands."

LA rent relief is coming. But as immigration raids continue, it might not close the gap.
Tenant organizers are still pressuring County leadership to pass an eviction moratorium.

LAPD can continue to use military weapons, foam bullets and tear gas after City Council vote.
The LA City Council voted 8-4 to let LAPD keep using foam bullets and tear gas despite documented misuse during this summer’s anti-ICE protests and over $50M in civil rights violation payouts last year.
The Trump admin has been clear that its mass deportation agenda relies not just on detentions but on making life so impossible for immigrants that they choose to self-deport.
@lacountybos.bsky.social 's inaction has worked hand in glove with ICE to bring that strategy to life.
A speaker from the Rent Brigade shared the story of Magda, a street vendor who felt she had no choice but to self-deport after receiving six eviction notices, leaving behind a daughter who cannot receive adequate medical care in Guatemala. She may never see her in person again.
Tenants from LATU - Somos Los Callejones, CLEAN Carwash Workers, Community Power Collective, and Rent Brigade spoke about closed businesses, decreased foot traffic, and the ever-present fear of not only ICE but of eviction.
Today we returned to the Board of Supervisors with members of the EVICT ICE NOT US (evicticenotus.org) coalition to demand eviction protections in the wake of the financial devastation of the ICE raids.
