the ~finished chainmail! ⛓️⛓️‍💥 ended up preferring how it sits and looks with the back sides facing out

would still love to add sleeves, and i may get some resin to seal the cuts bc honestly i gave up on pinching while i fiddled with the shape

part time barista job where we use canned tonic water! my coworkers have been kind enough to save tabs in a cup for me whenever they remember. it’s probably been a year or so of passive collection

takeaways:

super fun project! if you have tabs and a desire to try making chainmail, it’s a great free* way to give it a shot!! (*i already had 2 pairs of jewelry pliers/normal pliers/nail clippers/a staple remover)

really excited to try my hand at a proper chainmail project another time :)

and… i’m out of tabs, just after deciding that long sleeves would be sick :’) it’s “wearable” as is, and i like it, but i have some things to figure out before i share a pic. currently the plan is to tie it in the back

cross your fingers i’m able to collect enough tabs before ren faire szn

now that i’ve done all that & started sealing some of the big piece… turns out it’s easier (though more physical effort) to pinch the cuts flat with jewelry pliers as i make each unit.

this keeps them from slipping without making their positioning permanent. no nail polish smell is a huge bonus

working mostly in these diamond shaped “units” helps a lot with assembling something larger. this will probably be a shirt or a gorget of some kind in the end! it’s difficult to hold up as a big piece without tabs slipping out of place, but i don’t want to seal the cuts yet

a problem with fold & cut is that the tabs can slip back out pretty easily. a nail polish seal works ok… it would break if pulled, but it’s not going to slip!

resin/gel polish that you can UV cure is probably more convenient, but this is a recycling project for me! no buy so far >:)

jump rings method (gold) was SO much fun that i want to experiment with regular chainmail projects down the line (!!) but i prefer the look of staggered rings. wire-woven (silver) is great for static armor pieces, but i want MOVEMENT :)

fold & cut (pink) is what i’m going to work with for now

just became aware of this--the regime wants to clear-cut massive chunks of Oregon's old growth forests in the name of timber production.

you have until March 23rd to comment.

i know we have endless fucking things to scream at politicians about--this is an important one too.

For those who don’t know, Maine is one of the places - like Minnesota - that the federal government is specifically targeting, and ICE has kidnapped over 200 residents there since last week.
