I like it! I've sometimes done "Use 2d8" (or even 2d10) for the Reaction Roll in certain situations (Dwarfs from the same Clan topside, Celebrity Status, etc.)

My favorite "adaptation" of that lovely Gist song is probably this one though: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh2q...
Two that ended up getting covered by Lush!
They did a version of Demystification and Love at First Sight!
So much of my inspiration comes from random things like that. They make their way into Easter Eggs in plenty of my table entries!
DIY Mix-and-Match: Be a lot less strict about systems and rules, if something from somewhere else inspires you or your players, find a way to add it in rather than just discard it. These games are a lot more robust than we tend to give them credit for
Graph Paper Dungeon with corridors/rooms that spell out the phrase "Ktrey Sucks." Snuck in my pad of dungeons, ages ago by someone I used to date.
Could Be Worse!
I think most of the Beholder-centric things weren't until 2e. Seem to recall them showing up as Wandering Monsters in D1: Descent Into the Depths of the Earth, but don't really recall a *set piece* π€
They're 11***** HD in BECMI, but I've thrown them in Dungeons with lower level Parties before as a patrolling obstacle to avoid (though I was always more prone to using Gas Spores for that) Name/9th Level Characters seem about right for facing one *head on* though, provided they have plenty of Magic
Yeah, we use our combination "Fast Pack" and "Limited Choice" to speed things up a bit in some games: blog.d4caltrops.com/2021/06/upda...
Gear Options can communicate Setting/Types of Challenges sometimes!
Dice Trays? Character Sheet Pads with a *Bite Mark* taken out of them?
Whipped this together *very quickly* from some old Monster Generator Tables I've been working on (they exceeded 100, so they weren't the best fit for a normal blog post!)

I've always felt the beauty of a pun was in the oy of the beholder
Certainly doesn't! Though many crustaceans do carry their eggs on their chests for brooding π
Another aquatic option for horizontal tails: Crustaceans like Lobsters and Crayfish! π
A Spellcaster adept at meteorological manipulation might get to sail for free, someone who can Cook or Sew might also get a discount as Crew. Strong backs and hauling hands are often needed as well. But a leisurely cruise will be more expensive π
Just be careful you don't spend Too Long At Sea:
There's usually a bit of *Negotiation* involved in my games: If the Party is willing to help out, they might get a discount, but things like Mounts/Gear might up the price for passage.
My rule of thumb is still 1sp per mile as a *starting point* in times of Peace, through well-sailed waters.
Maybe a mnemonic?
A horde of hoary Dwarfs hoard all the gold in Smaug's hoard.
(nope, that's not helpful!)
Got a ranch in downtown Dallas

(could also call Dalworth for Carpet Cleaning from memory!)
Flight Doubles - No: Resents this immensely
Flight Doubles - Yes: Has another, formidable mode of unconventional locomotion such as Swimming, Burrowing, spontaneously appearing in Mirrors/Books
Dungeon Level Two from Arduin's Caliban Dungeon. Early techniques for identifying rooms (this one includes spelling out the number!)
Check out how they did it Arduin's Caliban:
Plastic Coin Album Binder Sleeves. Cut them up to make secure pouches for Item Cards.
We've used sticky tack for them to hold them to the sheet temporarily, but honestly the Plastic Sleeves they use for Coin Collection Albums work like a dream as well:
There's just little advice and wisdom scattered throughout in order to play more to the Sustained Campaigns that were an aspirational goal for a lot of Players back then. Not as many of those "One Shot Dungeons" back then outside of tournament Modules!
TWERPS rulebooks. Tiny zine style RPGs from the 90s: Pink Basic Rules, Green TWERPS Magic, and a Blue and White "How to do Everything Better"
New I hang onto these for a reason!
Section from B/X advising the DM to curate and scale their Encounters to the Strength of the Party.
It's always been amusing to me, because of the OSR's fascination with B/X. But this little blurb seems to be conveniently ignored much of the time π
Wizards are still a Class, but a lot of their levelling features (the ABCD stuff) revolves around gaining more Magic Dice (which are very much a GLOG thing)
Magic is mostly level-less, you just spend dice and risk a Mishap/Doom for the powerful stuff!
