The media only seem to talk about the futures market, probably because those prices are freely available from public sources. You need an expensive subscription to one of the market data publishers like Platts to find out the spot price.
The futures market isn’t exactly predicting what they think the price will be, it’s predicting what everyone else thinks it’s going to be. That indirect linkage creates weird price dynamics compared to the physicals market (i.e. buying a real cargo right now) which is pure supply & demand.
