Don’t stress me out James 😬🤞
Nothing like 20kg of coffee grounds to set you up for the day, breakfast of champs
Feeding time: coffee + food waste + bedstraw + undergraduate dissertations
I thought my field teaching this week was historical geography, maybe with a wee bit of political ecology, but tomorrow we’ll have to talk about critical geopolitics.
A view over moorland and forestry to tthe newly transformed beaver habitat of Loch Laude in Abriachan, Scotland.
Flight radar map of Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker doing loops over the Scottish Highlands, presumed for refuelling bombers.
Lovely day with students thinking about community ownership enabling Gaelic revival and ecological restoration.
12.11pm: the sound of a US KC-135 Stratotanker above us.
Profoundly unsettling.
Just a great film!
Just saw Everybody to Kenmure Street, magic film. Catch it if you can.
I think that while Mathieson and the SLT bear responsibility for the deterioration in trust and morale, there are problems bigger than individuals: we need to reform the structures of governance.
University management shouldn’t occasion this degree of rancour. Something has gone very wrong. Just a mess.
We desperately need reform to allow for more participatory governance.
Really appreciate that Adam! ✊
Things feel pretty bleak at work. This isn't normal.
Cold, determination ✊
I'm reminded of that terrible warning from the apostle James: “Weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you … Listen! The wages of the labourers … which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries have reached the ears of the Lord”
hospitality with limits & premised on radical self-sufficiency ... is very Embra
absolutely it is, but localities aside, it's such a useful observation to make in these times – and true in my experience too – the kindness of strangers is our best hope
Absolutely this
View of Edinburgh from Arthur's Seat looking west over Salisbury Crags and the old town, with the upper Forth in the distance.
Edinburgh being Edinburgh
NEW: We often hear that Scotland’s more progressive income tax is “driving people out the country.”
New HMRC data shows the opposite. Far more taxpayers are moving to Scotland than leaving it.
Let’s look at the data 🧵
Yeah, to be fair I didn't gravitate to the sludgier end of the site.
Literally my favourite place in Australia. *Love* the poo farm. Every time I'm in Oz, I make sure to plan a visit. Last time I saw a brolga chick and cried.
The BBC has run an interesting piece about USAF air refuelling tankers using Prestwick in Ayrshire to resupply for operations in Iran. John Swinney has implied when questioned this is untoward and his hands are tied: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Really? 1/4 🧵
Hmmm, yes, I fear they could. I haven’t thought this through.
A single red squirrel postcard lies on Princes Street, beneath the Scott Monument
A postcard stuck in a pothole
The most Edinburgh thing to have Edinburgh’d – a stand of Colin Baxter postcards scattered to the wind over Princes Street, a lost red squirrel snagged in a pothole.
Some very interesting work here on the biodiversity impact of land abandonment during the Black Death. I'd love to see something similar on the Highland Clearances ... it would usefully inform re-wilding chat.
‘First as tragedy, then as farce’ – bombing a girls school followed by this grotesque UN panto.
It's a truly grim timeline, friends, but we hope and work for justice.
breathe easy Jason, not out til spring 29!

cheers Nicholas!
