Six reasons why Trump’s attack on Venezuela was very wrong:
#lectrr @lectrr.bsky.social
My statement on President Trump’s actions in Venezuela.
Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela.
Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law.
Both of those facts are simultaneously true.
It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.
The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.
Very disappointing reactions from EU institutions and leaders. Even the European far-right have issued far stronger statements condemning the illegal US attack.
As a staunch European I honestly find it humiliating, how EU leaders talk endlessly about strategic autonomy and bold defence and democratic values and then when the moment comes to actually stand up for those things, they always - always! - react like a kitten in a thunderstorm
Trump says we need to go after drug cartels.
Meanwhile, he disbanded a DOJ task force that took them on.
And he pardoned a former Honduran president convicted of drug trafficking.
Trump doesn't care about drugs — he wants to be able to declare war on anyone he labels an enemy.
It's a power grab.
From my favorite U.S. cartoonist @mluckovich.bsky.social (already weeks ago).
Screenshot of post from Senator Markey reading: The Trump administration is lying to Congress and ignoring our constitutionally required approval for military action. This is what dictators do. This war is not just unjustified—it is unauthorized. Trump’s attack on Venezuela puts American lives in danger, destabilizes the region, and risks another endless war. Congress must get answers. The American people must get answers. And Trump must be held to account for this reckless, illegal act of war.

Exactly one month ago.
It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month.
It’s about oil and regime change.
And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.
Is this all Europe has to say? Really? What an unbelievably weak reaction. No condemnation, no questions asked. Just go ahead, @donaldjtrump-maga.bsky.social, we’ll continue to brown-nose and lick your boots.
Europe has become completely irrelevant during your time in office.

"Geen enkele democraat steunt het beleid van Maduro, zoveel is duidelijk. Maar dat wil niet zeggen dat je dan op een dag kan wakker worden en in je eentje kan beslissen dat je het land bombardeert en het staatshoofd wegvoert.
Dit is ronduit schokkend en ongezien."

Russia: it's OK to seize regions of Ukraine
China: it's OK to seize Taiwan (for starters)
North Korea: it's OK to seize South Korea
Greenland: a future cakewalk for US special forces
Saudi Arabia: Yemen, just take it.
Israel: it's OK to seize the West Bank and Lebanon
That's the Venezuela message
Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.
Kidnapping the leader of a foreign state without any declaration of war and announcing it via social media is full-on rogue state stuff. From the world’s number one superpower.
Rules-based international order has had a rough couple of decades, but this pretty much ends it entirely. Both the strikes and the capture of Maduro are also blatant violations of US domestic law too, of course.
100% seriously, European leaders and Commission officials should plan on the basis that the US might do this to them too, about Greenland, about tech regulation, about “Christian values”, about “free speech”, whatever.
Ik vrees dat hij voor een keer niet aan het liegen is. Zeer verontrustend!
The rule of (international) law really does not seem to apply for Trump and his cronies. This is very disconcerting for anyone who believes in democracy and international law. Even if Maduro is a dictator, that does not give the US the right to just go in and kidnap a foreign head-of-state.
So, about those American troops on European soil...
My husband @captmarkkelly.bsky.social is a 25-year Navy combat pilot veteran. He served our country with strength, courage, and integrity.
The President called him a traitor and demanded he be executed. It is dangerous and wrong. Americans need to stand up and say so.
There is nothing more American than standing up for the Constitution. And that's something Donald Trump will never understand.
I've had a missile blow up next to my airplane, been shot at dozens of times by anti-aircraft fire, and launched into orbit — all for my country. I never thought I'd see a President call for my execution.
Trump doesn’t understand the Constitution, and we're all less safe for it.
