Heck yeah, @arindube.bsky.social helps monopsony* and labor market power breakthrough into informed layperson discourse!
* BSKY spell check wants to change the word monopsony to monopoly, and that just proves how needed Arin's book, which is pitched to a broad audience, is!

Not having a (proper) job, comparatively speaking

Why is it that two similar capitalist economies can treat the exact same unemployed worker in completely different ways?

Good thread. There's tons a serious leftist govt could do whilst running a tight fiscal policy, as I said here: chrisdillow.substack.com/p/some-lefti... Social democrats' habit of viewing economic policy only through a "tax & spend" lens is a barrier to serious thinking about the economy.

A Chain Reaction How much indirect inflation should we expect from the Strait of Hormuz closing?

new from me at FORCES OF PRODUCTION

I used the (Weber et al, 2024) model to predict how much more inflation to expect via indirect effects over the next few months based on oil and refined products prices

(roughly .8pp, doubling the march CPI reading)

Uneven ground | Fabian Society Fabian Society

My analysis of Labour's problems has been published by the @thefabians.bsky.social . Lost support has mostly gone to left-liberal parties. To regain support, I argue Labour needs to go in a more progressive direction & create a progressive coalition to beat Reform. fabians.org.uk/publication/...

I'm a big fan of the triple lock. But this defence of it is stupid: there's no need to play off old against young (quite the opposite; the thing about the lock is that it benefits younger people more), nor to pretend that the lock is only affordable if we cut other benefits.

this has gone under the radar, but this crisis has also caused a global spike in the cost of plastic, which seems almost certain to increase the cost of food

similar to energy we need to defossilize food systems, reducing dependence on single-use plastics, shifting to more sustainable reuse models

More young people to be offered state-funded jobs in push to solve ‘Neet’ problem Work and pensions secretary Pat McFadden will also signal fresh effort to reform welfare benefits

Apprenticeship funding to be further rebalanced towards the under 25s and the youth guarantee expanded to cover 21-24 year olds. An awful lot more to do to deal with the chronic lack of support for young people/Neets, but these are welcome steps.
