Personally I hate it, and I loathe it when people cheer at servers being shut down. There are good reasons why people turn to private servers, and it's always Blizzard's (or their corporate overlords) fault as to why they do.

Any company can clamp down on anyone making money from their IP/assets. It's up to them of they want to enforce it or not. You'll notice Blizz are specifically targetting Classic+ servers, mostly, atm because it's obvious they want to do their own. They're killing the competition.

It's not that it's illegal. Blizzard could send any creator a C&D notice, no matter how big or small their business is. As an example, RexxCraft was sent one while only making NSFW art using Blizz assets.
