Cropped image of a modern and old-school take on armoured dinosaurs. The modern image, showing Borealopelta, is on the left, with brown colouring deduced from analysis of the Borealopelta fossil. The right, slightly faded image shows a stereotyped vision of nodosaurs based on various 20th century artworks.

Old vs. new takes on Stegosaurus. The modern version is on the left, with more defined anatomy, countershaded skin and variable plate structure. The old version, right, is slightly faded, and has the same green and red colour scheme that most stegosaurs had several decades ago.

Old vs. new Triceratops. The modern take, left, features enormous horns and vivid facial colouring, as seen in some animals that engage in facial combat in modern times. The old take is slightly faded, and shows a Jurassic Park-style elephantine reconstruction with short, bone-coloured horns and much wobbly anatomy.

Looks like it's OK to share parts of my new Scientific American #paleoart. The theme is "old vs. new" restorations of #dinosaur horns and armour: cue stereotyped past and progressive modern takes on Borealopelta, Stegosaurus and Triceratops.
