Moving through that fear, finding out what connects us, revelling in our differences; this is the process that brings us closer, that gives us a world of shared values, of meaningful community." ~ Bell Hooks

The Next Terrorist Attack And What Comes After (Updated)

Six months ago I wrote this post about “the next terrorist attack.” I republish it now (lightly updated) because my fear of this scenario has recently grown much greater.

We are losing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which has helped educate, inform, and entertain millions of Americans.

Instead, we’re getting a vulgar new gold ballroom, which none of us will ever see.

Quote from Cory Doctorows blog "Pluralistic" : "How frightening it must be to believe in a world without systemic explanations! It's a world where inexplicable spirits sweep across the land, engendering population-scale effects that are the result of millions of people making voluntary, individual decisions, disconnected from any kind of social phenomena. It must be terrifying, like living in a world secretly governed by demons or witches.

It's the world of the conspiracy fantasist."

Everything happening is a lot.
Take a breath. It’s not on you to fix all of it.
Find a corner of it you can work on.
Do a thing today that matters to you. Help someone you can help.
Don’t let anyone talk you out of trying.

Guns are not permitted within 1000 feet of a planned parade or protest. So the same law would not protect someone that shoots anyone in the protest area.

Most resistance in the world is not about protests, but 'everyday resistance' James C. Scott discusses how political science only registers the tip of the iceberg of resistance in history.

If you want to read a new book coming out but don't want to buy it, a great thing you can do is ask your local library to order it. The more requests they get, the more likely they are to acquire it and then lots of people will get to read it who othewise wouldn't.

This advice is important now, and will be even more important in two weeks, when the next administration is going to flood the zone with horribleness, with the intent of overwhelming everyone into compliance. Pick your battles and keep your focus. Trust others are doing the same elsewhere.
