@natathescribe.bsky.social yo, enjoyed hearing your hornets insight on O+G the other day, I forgot how much bobcats trauma i'd been repressing

Also for the uninitiated: I wrote for Our State for ten years and was on staff there for 6 1/2. It’s why I left Charlotte for Greensboro and the North Carolina Rabbit Hole obviously doesn’t exist without it. www.ncrabbithole.com/p/the-our-st...
tl;dr go ask someone's north carolina grandparents about our state, they'll light up
Oh yeah. You could also make the case that ESOPs have an incentive to be risk-averse and keep business models frozen in time, which sorta maybe might be a good thing for one particular magazine
dammit i'm probably gonna have to write about this
I could go on here. But I don't think it's possible to understand the undercurrent of North Carolina without Bernie basically creating the modern Our State magazine 30 years ago. It's certainly not perfect, but it presents NC that way. It's easy to be negative about this state, but OS will never be.
Also! In 2018, Bernie did something that is pretty rare in publishing: He formed an ESOP and sold the magazine to the employees. If you want Our State stock, you have to work there. That probably gave the place the best shot to make it in a media world that's fracturing rapidly.
It's also amazing how many people OUTSIDE of North Carolina have never heard of it. OS is laser focused on being a print magazine. It's doing more digital (the photography is like Instagram catnip), but the stories and writing are pretty much the opposite of the stuff that pops on social media now.
It's not topical, so it doesn't age very quickly. Back issues will sit on coffee tables and in waiting rooms FOREVER. Real estate agents give out subscriptions to new homeowners. Talking about the magazine is like speaking a secret language that the most OG North Carolinians are fluent in.
30 years ago, The State magazine was limping along and Bernie bought it and made it really nice. Better paper, glossier imagery, relentlessly positive focus. It went from a circulation of 24k to more than 160k today. It's still the second-largest regional mag in the US, behind Texas Monthly.
North Carolina has obviously grown quite a bit over the last three decades, but I don't think it's a stretch to say that on the Mount Rushmore of stereotypical North Carolina things (Cheerwine, NASCAR, barbecue), Our State has to be included in that list.
Here's some really big news: After 30 years, Bernie Mann (who's now 90 years old) has stepped down as publisher at Our State magazine and handed things over to Jenn White (who's been at the magazine for two decades herself). A quick thread... businessnc.com/jenn-white-n...
I wrote about Dianna Russini, the constant pressure female reporters face to prove they aren't sleeping with sources (plus the pressure we do get from sources to get involved with them), and why all of this is so uncomfortable to talk about.

not since baker mayfield beat the steelers in the playoffs five years ago
i am fascinated by the buzz about this (feel like ohioans love disney world and i've heard many versions of "oh wow, did you hear about the disney city?") versus the actual reality of what this will end up being (?!?)
