Why are straight white men overrepresented in positions of power? | Steve Phillips When we wonder why marginalized groups are ‘underrepresented’, we are asking the wrong question

Proud to debut the excerpt for my new book "Are White Men Smarter Than Everybody Else?" in today's @us.theguardian.com

Are White Men Smarter Than Everybody Else?: Playing Offense in the Fight for Racial Justice in America

I chose this title for my next book to force readers to say the quiet part out loud. After years of attacks on DEI, inequality still flourishes. It's time to squarely face the tough questions about the roots and tenacity of this inequality #AWMS

I'm regularly amazed that people are amazed that Trump is flouting and threatening democracy and democratic institutions. Lest we forget, THE MAN TRIED TO OVERTHROW THE ELECTED GOVERNMENT OF THE U.S.A.

None of this is surprising. . .

The left’s best defense against Trump? Ditching limousine liberalism | Dustin Guastella An effective fight against the president-elect requires a struggle that takes the frustrations of working-class voters seriously

My regular reminder that Dems won among "working class" voters (and this notion Trump championed working class is, ah, baffling). Oh, Dems won working class voters OF COLOR, It's the white voters who went R, as they have since LBJ signed '65 Voting Rts Act. . .

Democratic strategist calls for ‘new generation of leaders’ as party plots response to Trump’s victory Strategist who aided resurgence after Reagan says party should focus on ‘fundamentals’ – but cautions against leftward drift

Surprised to see Al From still commanding attention abt Dem Party direction. He founded Democratic Leadership Council in 1985 & blamed Jesse Jackson and the demand for racial justice for Dem Party loss. We called DLC -- Dems for Leisure Class #themorethingschange

Enough With the Bad Election Takes! To properly diagnose what went wrong, we need to look at the actual number of votes cast.

In his latest for @thenation.com, @stevepwrites.bsky.social explains what really went wrong in this year’s election.

Hint: It’s not that Dems lost a bunch of voters to Trump.

WHAT IF IT'S AS SIMPLE (AND COMPLICATED) AS SEXISM?

•What if sexism's the most accurate election explanation?

•Explaining the decline in Dem vote, the shifts in ALL racial groups (pls don't scapegoat POC)

•The excuses & vote increase for a sexual predator

Where are the think pieces on THAT?

The Democrats’ next campaign should appeal to their base, not swing voters | Steve Phillips Democratic strategists want to ‘persuade’ over voters. But the real problem is Democratic voters not showing up to polls

My latest for @theguardian.com There needs to be a reckoning in Dem politics, and a large part of that is holding accountable the failed Dem SuperPAC strategy by Future Forward that failed to invest in getting out the Dem vote

LET'S HAVE THESE CONVOS MORE STARKLY:

Democrats should support the oppression of transgender people in order to win elections

Your (regular) reminder that the biggest story of the 2024 election is the drop in Democratic voter turnout NOT a mass defection of voters to Trump. The Dem decline was nearly THREE TIMES as large as Trump's increase

A bit of context:

•Many writers, including Tom Edsall of @nyt-first-said.bsky.social write that Dems need to distance themselves from "unpopular progressive policies."

•60.3% of the voters opposed the anti-slavery candidate in 1860

•Should Lincoln have distanced himself from abolition?
