Gyalo Thondup, Political Operator and Brother of the Dalai Lama, Dies at 97 Mr. Thondup’s influence in Tibet has been seen as second only to his younger brother, Tenzin Gyatso, the exiled head of Tibetan Buddhism, whom he spent decades trying to help return to their homeland.

Gyalo Thondup, the eldest brother of the Dalai Lama and a political operator in Tibet and the greater region, has died, the Dalai Lama’s office confirmed. He was 97.
