new investigation for @starledger.bsky.social, I spoke with several families at the Jersey bayshore over fears contamination is linked to cancer diagnoses. So far: 41 cancer cases. Most are near a town’s old, improperly-capped and heavily-cited dump. h/t @karinpricemueller.bsky.social

Listen back to the full debut of Ask Governor Sherrill on @wnyc.org here! www.wnyc.org/story/nj-gov...
Second: Slim chances for a second wind. Sherrill is pursuing a wide range of energy development but the sector that had been fast tracked for years — offshore wind — remains on hold in NJ due to federal policies

Couple pieces of news out of last night’s debut Ask Governor Sherrill call-in show
First: Sherrill says FIFA needs to help pay for World Cup transit. Otherwise she’ll approve fare hikes — possibly as high as $100 for trips between Manhattan and MetLife on game days gothamist.com/news/nj-gov-...

NJ went all-in on wind power in 2022. This year, Gov. Sherrill says maybe someday. gothamist.com/news/nj-went...
Update: the public hearing scheduled for tonight on this situation was cancelled last minute after Hudson Regional Health was granted a temporary restraining order www.nj.gov/health/news/...
State officials rejected that withdrawal request, saying the closure application will continue to be considered. That means a planned public hearing tonight is still on, but now at a new location

NJ newsrooms are dying and shrinking, but is government funding the answer? gothamist.com/news/nj-news...
Meanwhile, @andrewzwicker.bsky.social is pushing a bill that would require state agencies to spend 30% of their marketing budgets on local media. A different idea for addressing the local news crisis, modeled after a NYC rule that has brought $72M to city newsrooms over a 5 year run
State lawmakers could add the funding back in the budget bill, but Sherrill says any adds will have to come with a matching cut elsewhere as she pushes to close NJ's spending gap.
Happy Local News Day
In NJ, local news is harder to find than ever. The NJ Civic Information Consortium has handed out millions in grants to help startups off the ground. That efforts been largely funded by the state, but Gov. Sherrill's budget plan cuts that money.

New: 150 unionized ProPublica workers are on strike TODAY over AI, layoff protections, wages, and more.
They're asking readers to not visit ProPublica or engage with content on other platforms. It's the first work stoppage of its kind at the newsroom.

People should actually be very alarmed that while AP's business model is shot to bits, Americans are still very much reliant on the news it delivers. The alternatives in some cases are inferior or non-existent.

It’s pushed by powerful Dem Paul Sarlo, whose office says NJ needs to recoup hosting costs. Republicans say Gov Sherill would be a hypocrite to sign.
Business groups are still forming their positions on the bill. One tourism expert told me he’s never seen an idea like this
NJ lawmakers are weighing a sales tax hike in the Meadowlands during the World Cup, plus higher fees on ride-shares, hotels and sports betting.
