Remember when big-budget movies had color?
The poster wearing a T-shirt that reads "Written and directed by The Wachowski Sisters" (white text on black fabric), while seated in a movie theater
The poster's legs, sporting blue jeans, black dress shoes, and red socks
T-minus ten minutes to SPEED RACER in IMAX. And yes, I'm wearing the socks.

Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter in the movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," photgraphed from a 35mm film print using a loupe, from the moment before he sings "how about that?"

This is like finding every episode of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show in HD. We have simply never heard the father of all blues/rock music this clearly before.

In case you missed it, I wrote about a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA screening at the Lincoln Theatre in Maine last month. It was an excuse for me to express some opinions about silent film accompaniment, and I also dug up a review of the film from when it played the Lincoln on first run in 1926!
Let's guess the last time this asshole bought something in a store.
Whoa!

Two thoughts: This gave me the first spark of hope that Lav Diaz will someday win an Oscar. (That he likely doesn't care about that matters more, of course.) And secondly, "competence porn" is now one of my favorite word pairings.

The protagonist of Terminator (1984) is a minimum wage waitress who rides a scooter to work. The protagonist of They Live! (1988) is a homeless dude who lives in East LA. The protagonist of The Matrix (1999) is a hapless corporate cog who hates his job enough to imagine the universe is unreal.

This is wonderful news, and most lovely prose. I was fortunate enough to be able to see this theatrically when it debuted, and made the point of going twice that week knowing Carmike would likely not carry it over the following week—it didn't.

I know it's among the more polarizing of his films, but I'll also stick up for HUGO here on account of it's contrasting singularity. His shortcomings as a human notwithstanding, Kingsley's performance gets at my tear ducts in a way few grown men are capable of.
