Listening also includes being able to take criticism and direction from others. Being flexible and molding your own unique style into whatever is being asked of you is yet ANOTHER skill that elevates musicality.
But were not even TAUGHT that we can HAVE our own unique style of performing in band.

You can have a good tone quality and strong technical ability if you practice and pay attention in band class.
But if you want to be truly great, and REALLY appreciate music making with others, you need to be just as good at listening to what they're saying with their playing.

I strongly believe that musicians need to be taught to get off the page just as much as they need to learn to read music proficiently.
Being able to listen to the music around you and react in real time is a skill that separates pros from amateurs and it is hardly encouraged enough in school.
