I have seen both used as past tense.
I only knew the names of British Prime Ministers between 1955 and 1975 because of the Goon Show and Monty Python. From context, you can guess “oh, that must be an important government figure.” But those jokes weren’t designed for an 8 year old American kid.

A related concept is that not every work of art is for you. Some is targeted or intended for an audience that has different wants and needs than you. And that’s fine. It’s VERY freeing to conclude “this isn’t for me” and stop reading/watching.

That was primarily the AMA chunk I called out in the second half. The new association of male doctors faced heavy competition from midwives for women’s medical care. Abortion was a big source of income for midwives. Outlaw abortion and you destroy female competition in medicine.
