„man-things“
Posts by Philipp Laeseke
A man writing about a man doing man-things in a colonial man‘s world.
Still, a captivating book on the emergence of biogeography as a discipline connecting the abiotic, geological realm with the distribution and evolution of species as perceived by Wallace during years of most-impressive fieldwork
For every £1 directed toward protecting nature in 2023, £33 went toward destroying it.
A landmark new @ipbes.net report sets out what businesses need to do, and the tools already exist to do it.
We've written a short explainer on what it means in practice.

Infographic with an underwater photo split between lush green seagrass (left) and bare sandy seafloor (right). IPBES logo top right reads "Science and Policy for People and Nature." Large white text: "Seagrass Meadows – Lost over 10% Every decade, 1970–2000." Bottom text: "IPBES Global Assessment reveals critical marine decline impacting biodiversity and climate resilience."
Marine ecosystems, from coastal to deep sea, now show the influence of human actions, with coastal marine ecosystems showing both large historical losses of extent and condition as well as rapid ongoing declines.
Let’s act to restore what’s been lost. 🌊🌱
Happy World #Seagrass Day!

I just visited Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica, one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. Walking in this pristine forest and experiencing the sheer diversity and interactions of plants, animals, fungi, lichens, the elements, in this ecosystem was almost spiritual. Protect life on Earth!
We ( @mormoops.bsky.social @hannoseebens.bsky.social ) recently published a dataset on native and non-native ranges of invasive species doi.org/10.1038/s415...
We are at #tibs2026 by @biogeography.bsky.social with a poster (number 1061) to present it!
Poster session at #tibs2026 by @biogeography.bsky.social now! My talk tomorrow on forecasting spread of NIS.
German academia: great place to work? You should think twice before giving it a try: Permanent positions are very rare, most scholars have to drop out after some precarious years. @dianakwon.bsky.social has written a great piece about this for @nature.com and also talked to yours truly. #IchBinHanna
Thank you! 😊
We did not have an opportunity to go to Hvalfjördur, but Fucus serratus is thriving around Reykjavík. We found no hybrids though. Did anybody further investigate the hybrids by any chance? 🤔 they looked so weird!
In winter 2012/13 I had a great time studying Fucus with @lomentaria.bsky.social for my Bachelor Thesis. Now I am here again, showing my child these beauties.
The latest research confirms AMOC weakening together with a tipping point that is getting closer and closer. Governments are starting to notice with Iceland the first to declare it a national security threat.

A really well written blog post about the values people hold in relation to #grassland restoration. A key outcome of our Grassworks project, asking what leads to success in grassland restoration.

The young modelers in ecology (YoMo), a specialist group of the @gfoesoc.bsky.social, are currently organizing an exciting workshop series about ecological modeling.

I will present my work with @hannoseebens.bsky.social and @mormoops.bsky.social on forecasting spread of non-native invasive species at this years @guardias.bsky.social online conference from 13th to 14th of November.
Too bad the article is behind a pay all, but the title says a lot. We don’t talk enough about mental health challenges in academia and most institutions don’t seem to have resources in places to support students and postdocs going through difficult times

New publication! We mapped the global genetic diversity of marine forests of brown macroalgae. Using genetic data, machine learning & past climate projections (LGM, ~20k yrs ago), we identify hotspots of diversity that shape resilience & conservation priorities. 🌍 🌊

Registered for @biogeography.bsky.social conference 2026 and will give a talk about our (@mormoops.bsky.social & @hannoseebens.bsky.social) new model approach to forecast invasive species spread based on traffic gravity model and landscape resistance maps derived from open data. 🥳
