I don't think extremists consider things broadly. They simply react. But on some level they do believe they act for a general purpose a la the Powell memo. They believe democracy is a softener of the manly American essence. Their befuddlement destroys us but of course they'll blame someone else.

It's not clear-cut to me. It wasn't intentionally genocidal in terms of official policy, but there was a huge amount of indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, and the use of shit like Agent Orange has caused multi-generational reproductive problems.
