I was an exchange student in Japan when it came out and my host brother took me to see it. My Japanese was not up to understanding what the heck was going on. So I was excited to see it in English a couple of years later - but still couldn’t understand what the heck was going on.

Or that China has battery change stations that replace a car’s battery with a freshly charged one in less time than it takes to fill a car with a tank of petrol.
Image of the Simpsons character Krusty the Clown looking sad and confused.
Sarah Ferguson directly after this report aired:
Riveting TV it wasn’t. Talk about a zero-effort report.
Two of her siblings also won events: Emmanuella won the U14 100m and 200m; and Paul won the U18 100m (and unfortunately disqualified in the 200m for a false start, but he was favoured to win that too).
Seriously talented family!
Well Soviets rather than solely Russians: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania,Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan were all part of the Soviet war effort.
Oh and yay for you! Star Trek is great, I hope you have a lovely time discovering it!
Amongst other things, TOS suffers from the absurdity of the Captain being on every Away Team (first or second Officer’s job). The plots needed this so that Kirk could endeavour his way into alien pants, but TNG works a whole lot better by observing basic operational rules.
*ahem* field. Pole vault is a field event, not track. Not the point of the story I know, but it’s track AND field, not track OR field.
There’s no doubt that Adrian brought joy to the performance, along with vocal talent and singular guitar skills.
The tightness of this performance is more remarkable as Bill and Robert were feuding: Bill refused to keep time, Robert keeps his own time, so Tony programmed click tracks for Adrian!
Great article - travelling in Egypt in the early 90s with my mother - a consultant psychiatrist - I was forever warned about the dangers of ‘Bilharzia’ (as it was still known then) particularly on the tender parts of young men.
Yes, but can you call him a r@pist drug fiend?
In rebuttal I offer this most terrifying and beautiful work - from the Double Duo era (although Adrian Belew is absent, he returns for the next song, Lark’s 4, which is also from the terror repertoire)

Part of the problem was that the officers were absent, so the ‘warrior’ culture amongst the enlisted and NCOs was able to develop.
The doesn’t excuse these officers of course, and they bear Command Responsibility for the crimes and should be charged too (see the Yamashita Standard from WW2)
Very good - one of your best.
As well as putting a serious dent in the USD as the currency used in oil deals (which sets it as the de facto world reserve currency which in turn allows the US to rack up trillions in deficits).
Slowest time in the universe is the lead up to discharge time
As the saying goes:
Nothing excuses October 7
October 7 excuses everything
No fudge, no judge - no crimson suspenders either (much to the chagrin of my inner 16yo child). Some dribble about international monetary supply/banking. Much more mature but a lot less fun.
I found Jakko came over a lot better live than he does on recordings. Bill was too ill to play drums (a tumour broke his sternum) so did keyboards. I found the re-write of Easy Money’s lyrics more jarring than Indiscipline.
Mel Collins was the revelation - he can play like no one else.
Australia was very strict on amateurism until the 1990s. A big professional athletics league, with Gift (this kind of handicapping) races all over the country developed as a result.
Stawell is the oldest and richest Gift, $40k 1st prize, and is now a big Easter festival.
This is an Australian Professional (from when IAAF was strictly amateur) race called the Stawell Gift. Athletes are handicapped depending on their times prior. This should result in everyone finishing at the same time. Limit is 14m, not enough for Sha’carri - but see how she goes in semi and final.
I read the revised version of John Fowles’ The Magus for the first time a couple of years ago - I’d read the original twice. It is really a very different work - he claims to have only tinkered with language that annoyed him, but the (in)famous ending hits very differently.
I saw King Crimson in Tokyo in 2018 (as an octet ‘the Eight Headed Beast*’) and they preformed Discipline perfectly. No mean feat as they had three drummers.
*Robert Fripp, Jakko Jaksyk, Mel Collins, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin, Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto & Jeremy Stacey.
Russians were competing - there was drug cheating, they just haven’t been caught yet.
I find this graph helps (the streaming soundwave is even more blocky). One skips tracks by lifting the stylus - gets easy after some practice
Plus having a go at Prof Steve Robson, then AMA President, when Stating her claims were from someone (not a medical doctor) with a PhD. His response ‘well I’ve got two PhDs, so I’m not sure of your point’!
As Jamie Oliver is to Asian cooking, so Leigh Sales is to basic economics.
There are too many errors to dwell on, but there was no ‘relative prosperity’ from the late nineties-
It was real prosperity, 40+ quarters of economic growth (mostly squandered by Howard and Costello)
I wonder if he’s purging generals out of security/paranoia or because he wants to take over command?
Maybe both - is there a betting option for that?
My son wore an old tux of mine - it cost $40 for a tailor to adjust it to fit him. a second-hand one, or one from a buy-nothing (or similar) group will work well, especially if you get it tailored.
If he does go for black tie, it is essential he wear a cummerbund! (I can send you one)
