It is staggering that no-one in the civil service vetting team warned Shabana Mahmood not to tell a joke about deporting and tasering opposition leaders, yet again the civil service failing this hard working government

Finished this, it was great and heartbreaking and sadly inevitable, am now listening to The Cold Cold Ground which, despite looking like a book that has an advert on the tube with lines like "Professor Brett McMuscles Has 24 Hours To Find The Lancashire Strangler", is actually really rather good

Two arrested over Kenton synagogue arson attack A bottle containing a type of accelerant was thrown at the synagogue in Harrow, north-west London.

we need a collective response to hate. zero tolerance. the people doing this do not want a free Palestine (how the fuck is attacking Kenton going to free Palestine anyway??) or whatever else they think they might be achieving. The people doing are targeting all of us

I feel this shows American cinema has desperately been trying to outflank TV for seventy years by providing what TV doesn't. In the 70s that mostly used to mean material too adult for TV. When American TV finally did provide that, cinema shifted to CGI spectacle on a scale TV couldn't afford.

People get incredibly neurotic about losing fingers because they've never lost one. Once it's happened to you it's annoying but fine and you start juggling knives/hand feeding crocodiles more often.

Yeah, true, but it is still a big step forward even assuming the half marathon was entirely flat and straight the whole way, usually they fall pretty quickly

Everyone saying this is not a big deal - yes, in some ways it's not because of course a machine could beat a human in a race, but in others it's sort of massive because robots have traditionally been rubbish at running (hard to get the balance/momentum right at speed so it's very easy to fall over)

This means you have a detailed roadmap of your script and a safety net to fall back on... But without the pressure of it having to be Good

My big piece of advice (genuinely) is to trick yourself into doing a "beat by beat" which is a Word doc/notes doc of everything that happens in each scene. this can be as bad and as long and as stupid as you want. But!! it absolutely cannot be in Final Draft/proper formatting

It’s inaccurate to say Mario is brave and Luigi is cowardly

Luigi is afraid of death, so he runs away from danger. Mario is afraid of living, so he runs towards death. Both brothers are cowards in their own way

Ten points back it’s Armando Iannucci in third place for the series — his score of 15 (3.0) is the best score a man has managed this series, but it’s still below either of the women’s worst scores (16 points from Amy Gledhill last week). Early days but there’s a bit of a gulf forming — while Amy and Joanna are in the top five for all-time scores, all of the men are in the bottom fifteen, with Armando in 92nd place with a PPT of 2.62, just behind Ivo Graham and Nick Mohammed (oh dear). Armando at least won a solo task this week (for expertly throwing himself on the floor in a goatee), although he did also get disqualified (for amateurly throwing a bowling ball in a bucket without a goatee) — he’s the first contestant to receive their first task win and their first disqualification in the same episode since Andy Zaltzman in Episode 1 of Series 18 (who went on to win his series, potentially a good omen…). The worrying thing for Armando is that he’s currently averaging just 2.00PPT in solo filmed tasks (usually the best metric of success in Taskmaster) — if repeated across the whole series this would be the second worst average of all time, ahead only of Katherine Parkinson. He’s also averaging 2.00PPT in objectively judged tasks (another good metric of success) — if repeated across the whole series that would make him the third worst ever, with only Sue Perkins and David Baddiel averaging worse (1.96PPT). It’s not time to panic just yet, but if he keeps this up he’ll have more to worry about than doing the bins.

cartoon figure holding keir starmer and saying "Really? Right in front of the prime minister?"

{someone at no. 10 mentions an item in the news}

I suppose the core of the joke is that Starmer showed such a lack of curiosity in the status of a very controversial figure's vetting that he went out of his way to avoid hearing about it, and I don't think it's unreasonable to think that someone at some point tried to tell him

ME: [wincing, covering up Starmer's ears] sorry, do you mind not talking about politics around Keir? He doesn't know about scary things like nuclear war or poverty or Peter Mandelson and we'd like to maintain his innocence for a bit longer

KEIR: my father was a drill bit

ME: that's right Keir!
