Nobody else in this house gets stuck with having to drill holes in the walls.

Take a moment to soak up the close ups and enjoy how much they bubble with personality. Personality that we can all be thankful we are not on the wrong side of!

They're bursting into a clearing, highlighted against the surrounding shadowy forest, balancing the cool blues and greens with the warmth of the foreground figures and foliage. Sunbeams in the upper left and scattered throughout the forest felt like a necessity to seal the deal on that lighting.

The auction has begun for Spry and Mighty, my final piece for Lorywn Eclipsed. It runs until 11pm East / 8pm Pacific on Tuesday March 17th.

I love images with a strong narrative and here's a kithkin and a treefolk who work together (to fight crime?) and wade into a fight with enthusiastic roars!

Dude.
That is brilliant.

My wife (a tech writer) once asked me if I was upset that she makes more money than I do. I told her I wasn't upset that she made more, I was upset that artists (and other creatives) are so chronically underpaid.

Redirecting...

I should mention the depth of colors is closer to the first image rather than the photo of me holding it. I missed that the painting was catching a little too much glare from above. Usually that honor is reserved for my shiny bald head.

Thorna's shoulder armor are the roofs of Kithkin buildings, and her ankle bracelet is decorated with Kithkin shields and several swords swinging back and forth providing a vicious first line of defense just by the motion of walking.

From the very first concept sketches, this strong underlighting was the formative look of the whole painting. The giant and treefolk's shapes and poses were designed to make the most of this lightsource, with the added bonus of backlighting the fleeing kithkin caravaneer.

Thorna and Twigtooth, giant frenemies that like to needle each other as they stride across the dark plains that are criss-crossed with cracks spewing golden light. They pay little attention to the poor kithkin fleeing their path of ambling destruction.

The auction for Thorna and Twigtooth is running on the MTG Art Market until 11:30pm Eastern / 8:30pm Pacific on March 10th. The art was part of the Alchemy release for Lorwyn Eclipsed.

It's my only dip into Shadowmoor in Lorwyn Eclipsed.

The magical staff he wields is a part of him, not only fully melded into one of his hands, but if you look in the lower left you'll see that the base of the staff forms from his roots. The orange flowers echo the warmer tones hidden in the trees, rocks, and grass.

With the especially dour expression, I had to give him a side-swept 'hairstyle' of roots reminiscent of some of the original emo-rockers! Having his eyes glow a brilliant green was both a necessity to provide dramatic lighting around the face and to really amp up the intensity of his stare.

It's time for my next auction on the MTG Art Market: Great Forest Druid.

The art description called for a grumpy rowan treefolk standing guard at the outskirts of a forest. The treefolk has the form of a stump and his face sits in the base of the stump.

Of course, if I'd known the card was going to be called Flamebraider I would have rendered the flames in a much more coiling fashion.

The second reason was that I felt introducing all those other strong colors would actually diminish the final piece. What works on a card doesn't always work on a full sized piece, and now, almost a year and a half later, I still believe the narrower palette benefits and unifies the final piece.

The big change between the original and the card image is the lack of the multi-colored flames. I did this for two reasons; one, the practical, in that moving the color shifts to a digital layer allowed me to experiment.

My opportunity to paint a Flamekin in Lorwyn Eclipsed came with bonus deity-action courtesy of Eirdu. The Flamekin is a worshipper of Eirdu, showcasing her joyous reverential dance on a gentle peak, giving her an uninterrupted view of her god. Her outfit includes a number of stylized sun symbols.

I have been remiss and failed to mention that my original art for Flamebraider is being auctioned in the MtG Art Market on Facebook. The auction ends tonight at 11pm Eastern/ 8pm Pacific.

Ah, my final Lorwyn card - and my second favorite piece I did for the set - has just been officially revealed.
And yes, I wish this was a physical card too.

If you check out the details of the bassinet you'll see it's actually a repurposed kithkin boat with extra masts tied to the sides to give additional height. With this concept in place, it seemed logical to make the teething ring be the boat's old wheel.
