I have written the first 8 chapters. I think I'm about 25% of the way through my first draft. It's the first time I've got this far without losing the will to live. 50% by the end of the month? or is that crazy? 🤣

This book was witty, charming and very readable.

Elizabeth's musings on life and gardening and Other People are just delightful. Admittedly, nothing much happens, but sometimes that's best.

I've read some genuinely terrible books recently. This one was actually very enjoyable so here we are:
I was lucky enough to pick it up as a freebie and once my TBR is under 300 I might even pay money for the next book in the series.

My book club amigas didn't like it (long, boring, no real plot, no proper ending...) but -

I loved its scale and scope and the blend of historical truths and magical realist vibes. The writing was beautiful, too.

I'd never even heard of Elizabeth von Arnim but I came across this book and I'm definitely going to read more!

She's witty but also cosy, and this 1920s story about 4 strangers sharing a holiday in an Italian castle has stolen my heart.
