From “The Simpsons” house genius John Swartzwelder, interviewed in The New Yorker by Mike Sacks
Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage. A woman answers the door. We have come for the child, says the hooded figure So soon? she asks It is time, says the hooded figure. The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card! What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading! For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman, the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them. Do not cry mother. I am a writer now.

A digital illustration of two japanese lesbians flirting in a queer underground bar in the 80s. One of them wears a blue jacket, the other a suit, while in the background there's liquor and a multitude of little stickers and illustrations of lesbian and queer marks.
The full illustration I did for @taplingzines.bsky.social "We've Always Been Here"
The zine depicts queer couples throughout cultures and history and I had the honours of portraying a Japanese lesbian couple in an underground bar during the 80s✨

NOW: B52 bombers are literally in the air on their way to Iran and hundreds of thousands of Iranians are in the streets waving flags and surrounding bridges & power plants.
Difficult to imagine this has any precedent in modern warfare.

Don’t you hate when you have no choice but to disguise your hostage/situationship and sneak him into the local village, inadvertently giving him a glimpse into your less-than-spectacular life?

Vibe check for my WIP main character. Taelyn: 100% certified hater. Especially of cowards.
I’m just watching along as a spectator - and in general, pretty helpful stuff especially re: first pages! But curious how authors will know which/if these queries are theirs?

…in making learning and knowledge something to be craved? Where did human curiosity go??
Someome might need to go on a quest to find + restore it. Because humanity kind of sucks without it.
(Smooth brain activities ≠ not to be confused with smooth brain, the very real neurological condition.)
I wonder why engaging with books or media that challenges our assumptions about perspective, morality, or narrative is seen as tiring and burdensome, rather than stimulating and engaging.
Why are people bored of learning? When did they decide they don’t want to learn anymore? Where did we fail…
Great thread below.
It reminds me of something a Gen Z coworker told me about - “smooth brain activities,” which I understood to mean low effort/soothing activities that don’t require much mental effort. There seems to be a gravitation away from anything that activates critical thinking pathways. 🧵

Drawing in a quasi-Celtic style of eight frogs arranged symmetrically in four circles, surrounded by ornamentation that goes outside the frame

Adds a bit of a wrinkle to the “would you rather be alone in the woods with a random man or a bear” question… am I guaranteed that the bear won’t just be a man transformed by a witch?!
