CC13, have not yet subjected myself to reading this. It seems like a strategic move toward becoming the (more) favored elite university of the regime. They have avoided being made an example like Harvard/Columbia/Cornell/Penn, now they are looking for some addtl benefit

@catscoffeecats.bsky.social on this: “Blessed are the meek, for they will be called soft on crime”

The grandfather of Elbridge "Bridge" Colby was William Colby, OSS veteran and CIA director under Nixon. Also very staunch and devout Catholic. (And controversial in many ways, which you can look up.)

Trying to imagine what he would make of this.

I expect more from Marco, he was a lapsed Catholic before he was a convert

999/1000 linguists agree. Audible surprise in the audience when he strolled onstage (no name tag, no invitation) at a conference I attended this Nov

*Moon of the Crusted Snow* by Waubgeshig Rice is horror/sci-fi, it centers disaster but the disaster isn’t colonial

I’ve been looking forward to *To the Moon and Back* by Eliana Ramage; not read yet

I want to make *headcanon* happen but for academic papers. “I headcanoned this article as saying X but it actually says Y”

Have listened to the entire Taylor Swift discography while writing this damn book. *1989* alone was enough for dissertation, unfortunately this thing is 3x as long

A Tutorial for Video in Spoken Language Documentation Spoken language always goes along with meaningful visible behavior, such as gesture and eye gaze. But while language use is multimodal, published recommendations and formal training in spoken language...

My lates paper in LD&C with @chirila.bsky.social is now out! This tutorial teaches you everything about video-based fieldwork on spoken lang 🗣️ that I learned the hard way, from buying peripherals to archiving. 🐦🐦

This could only be more crazy making if participants were eating at the same time…Glad to see you aren’t putting yourself through transcribing every ‘hhh’

What are we saying instead of “citizen science” these days? Not loving the term when “citizenship” is fraught. Distributed science? 🐦🐦🧪

Imagine working at a political science department and thinking you have something to teach @emilymbender.bsky.social about language technology

How do you distinguish *in spoken english* between ‘American’ = from the Americas and ‘American’ = from the USA?

People write things like ‘USian’ but I’ve heard that actually get said maybe once ever, and ‘languages/etc of the Americas’ is a) wordy + b) implies indigeneity (not always intended)

Awesome list but very region specific. Is this intended for people that work in the Pacific?

Pls spare a thought for me. Born and lived 17 yrs in a place (AZ) with no DST. Just barely figured it out then went another place without it (Peru).

Now need to call 3 time zones in the Americas every week from the UK.

Time Warp is hell and in the spring it is THREE weeks long!!

Interoperability definitely a better choice than everyone being poorly served by 1 system or everyone trying to write their own system. One of the actionable points from our paper on FLEx 🐦🐦 (Ling research software). “Malleable software” exists in that space but ends up being brittle

WW2/Korean War/general contractor/Franciscan lay tertiary. Had 10 kids (still all alive).

WW2/100% disabled vet/only further info known to me is that he met grandma at a Communist Party USA meeting in 1952.

That 2nd one wouldn’t hit so well in the election ads ;)

lol, my data is not even transcribable with TTS, which is entirely normal in child language research/lang doc 🐦🐦. Good luck LLM.

But to this dude “social science” apparently means poli sci and econ based on English words and numbers only. Has someone told him about psych

That incredible efficiency of laying off so many staff, that you then need to hire again

I sent FOI requests to all 34 members of the Russell Group and Research Plus to collate this data, though only 24 replied on time. Still a decent sample. Not happy reading.

I spend over 10% of all contact hours in 1 of my current classes doing in-class writing activities because of this. Not the greatest use of limited class time but there is no other way (in constrained UK assessment system) to get work I know they wrote

Arguments and setup suggestions for camcorders here. Intended for lang documentation people so not 100% about conversation but I have used these specs to film many many conversations blogs.ed.ac.uk/amaliaskilto...

Camcorder plus body-worn microphones on any participants I know will be there the whole time. Camcorder is just way more versatile tool than action camera and files are easier to work with.
