The one time I missed a flight (La Guardia to London via Montreal) through no fault of my own other than for trusting a (now ex-) friend to be able to get me there in anything near good time, I was fortunate, and Air Canada enormously accommodating, to have a later option via Toronto. Never again.

We were on the train to London fifteen years ago, pre-booked into the Doctor Who Experience the next day.

Spent a while here. 😒

Plus it could get over a sleeping policeman without falling over and flailing itself to death.

Many years after I was married, I found out that my (German) best manΒΉ had read translations as a child! And that they'd continued long after I'd grown out of them.

I also read mystery/crime as a child (Three Investigators/Hardy Boys) and that's more of a hold over into adulthood.

Got into SF very early. Read my first AC Clarke at 9, then devoured him and Niven, some Asimov. I read v little of the genre these days, although my ACC obsession has carried over into a lot of popular science (Mary Roach, Sue Black, James Gleick &c). 1/2

For those craving some comedy tonight in the absence of SNL UK, might I suggest steering clear of Mrs Brown's Boys on BBC Three?

In fairness, there's a lot of people on Lewis who don't like very much.

A fortnight ago, I said privately to a Labour peer that waiting for the DIP was like waiting for Godot. He replied, β€œYes, Mark, but at least Godot finally turned up.”

In fairness to Poundland Penfold, he's mentioned this before, and *claims* he's quoting a Labour peer.

I'd be quite wary of the roles some royals might want you to play.
